It’s the citrus character that is the most immediately obvious in this wine. But there is much more to it than just that: wood, ripe peaches and quinces, and a layer of fresh acidity that more than balances the ripeness of the fruit. Relatively closed up at this stage, not giving much, this wine is all about freshness, poised but rich fruit and a structure that suggests long-term development. The wood is quite prominent, overshadowing what will be delicious yellow-fruit flavors. Come back to this wine in five years—it will be magnificent.

A tight, very mineral wine, with crisp acidity, firm fruit flavors and just hinting at caramel and vanilla. This is still young, hiding behind its structure. Give it 3–4 years.

The weight and structure of this wine comes from the powerful 2002s, as much as from Gevrey-Chambertin. The wine is still very firm, dominated by dry, leathery tannins. Only when the wine is in the mouth for a while do the full, red fruits come through, although on the finish, the tannins close in again.
