Rich and jammy in the mouth with big tannins. A little hot on the finish--14.5% explains that.

Full bodied for a tempranillo, hot, jammy and full of tannins that linger in your mouth long after you finish your taste.

Tempranillo is my new favorite varietal. Jammy yet European with a little "flair." Tasty.

We had this wine at a Zachy's sponsored Spanish tasting event at Mercat in NY. All of us, including the ex-sommelier at Fleur de Sel were shocked that such a great wine was around $14. Was it the best wine of the evening - not. But it was the best for the price point. A guaranteed crowd pleaser. I think the only issue is that it's hard to find.

Varietal: 100% Tinta del Pais Robert Parker (92pts): The 2000 Valderiz Tomas Esteban (named after the proprietor) comes from 80-year-old, bush trained, Tempranillo vines which have been biodynamically farmed. The wine spent 30 months in French oak of which 30% was new. Purple/opaque in color, the wine has aromatics more reminiscent of Syrah than Tempranillo with bacon, blood, soy, and smoke making a splendid first impression. This is followed by a wine with superb depth, ripe flavors of black fruits and minerality in the background. There is excellent balance and enough sweet tannin to support another 5 years of bottle age.
