Harsh and burnt-smelling, with beet-like flavors and too much body weight. One could argue that it gets better as it airs out, but nobody should have to wrestle with a rosé just to get something likable from it. Past its prime with nowhere to go.

Controlled, slightly leathery, honest and nice overall. A mix of black cherries and herbal aromas ride the bouquet, while the palate is earthy and shows plum and mild tomato flavors. A good mouthfeel that’s more racy than outright heavy allows the wine to cleanse and not overwhelm what you’re eating.

Full-force blackberry, cherry, and licorice create a lovely bouquet, which is followed nicely by cherry, plum, and additional berry flavors. The finish is broad, meaty and firm, with fine tannins.

This well-priced red from Tarragona shows a glimpse of what the Montsant region can produce. The nose is all red fruit, with a splinter of oak. The palate is chunky and easy as it deals blackberry and raspberry in spades. Chocolate and mocha on the thick finish should please the sugar mavens.

With spice, raisin and driving dark-fruit aromas, this sweetie is lifted and enticing on the bouquet. Big, rowdy and complex in the mouth, with layered cherry, cough drop and kirsch flavors. Very pure late, with coffee, chocolate and even more spice to the finish. Shows good fruit, acids, heft and overall balance. Delicious and highly recommended.

This old-vine Grenache is unique and surprising, with its touch of lilac and currant on the nose, followed by full-bodied, lush berry and currant flavors. It’s tannic and needs to age, but should develop into a velvety, integrated treat with a few years on it. One of the better kosher wines on the market.

Ripe and attractive, with deep red fruit aromas. The palate is intense and thorough, with solid tannins supporting ripe, natural flavors of baked berries, particularly blackberry and dark plum. Subtle and smooth on the finish, with length. The blend is 50% Garnacha and 25% each Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2013.

Big and dark, and it comes with no shortage of prune, blackberry, smoky oak and depth. A lusty flavor profile filled with blackberry, cola, clove and chocolate is stout and satisfying, while the dark finish sports licorice and bitter cacao. Forthright and chunky wine. Drink now into 2011. Imported by Fine Estates From Spain.

Lemony and light on the bouquet. The palate is aggressive, almondy tasting and tight, with lemony lead flavors, peach notes and a lasting but not unpleasant bitterness. Nicely balanced, with good mouthfeel. A very nice wine and a different breed within the wide world of Spanish white wines.

Still young and jumpy, but the ripeness and pedigree of this Penedès bruiser is beyond reproach. It’s big, bold and deep as a mountain lake, with black plum, bullion and a pile of blackberry on the palate. Tons of extract and tannins make this inky, saturated heavyweight a wine to ponder. For fans of forward, beefy reds. Imported by Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.
