Big in every way, with tons of new oak, popcorn and coffee sitting on top of dark-fruit aromas. Modern despite its incorporation of several indigenous grapes, this blend delivers a blast of roasted black cherry and plum flavors in front of a resiny finish that’s dripping with menthol and molasses. Unique if a touch syrupy; it’s clearly shooting for the modern style.

Montsant’s inherent character is nicely captured in this blend of Carignan, Syrah and Grenache. The bouquet is entirely smooth and inviting, if a bit generic. And the palate delivers ripe berry flavors that don’t vary much from the fruity and basic. Call it simple or call it just right for the price; this is a fine red wine with character, balance and ease.

This co-op wine is a touch minty and herbal, but it has enough class and red fruit to earn props. Cherry and raspberry dominate the flavor profile, while the finish is dry and a little bit starchy. Zesty and full of pop, but lean in the middle.

Heavily stewed and raisiny, almost to the point of no return. And while the wine is definitely cooked and starchy, it rallies on the palate and finish to show some decent Priorat-style richness and flavor. But let’s face it, the wine is 80% baked and won’t last for much longer.

Our bet is that a granular, reduced, raisiny wine like this will not have broad appeal. Yet if you are interested in trying a blend of Samsó, Garnacha and Syrah it has some core qualities, namely old-school raisin and plum flavors backed by core tannins. A country-style wine if there ever was one.

As long as the price keeps creeping up on this wine, we’re happy to say that the quality seems better and the oak level lower than in past years. This version of Milmanda offers roasted corn, walnut and other smoky, barrel-based aromas. Throughout the fruit is shy but the mouthfeel and oak are smooth. Finishes with a blast of white pepper and toast.

Ripe and pure, with good heft, body, structure and length. The blend is 60% Syrah and 40% Garnacha, and while the early aromas are tough and rubbery they soon morph into plum and berry. Raspberry and full plum flavors are thick but balanced as spice and pepper close things out.

Very big, modern, sweet and oaky. And that doesn’t mean it’s bad, because the richness, high alcohol (15%), buttery barrel notes and candy-like qualities are all rendered well. Still, be on the watch for creamy oak, cinnamon, café mocha and butter more than precise, angular fruit character. Should get more integrated with another year of bottle age. The boisterous blend is Garnacha, Syrah and Mazuelo.

Soft and buttery on the nose, with a touch of pear. Shy pear and apple flavors drive toward a modest finish that’s dry and almondy. Smooth on the palate, but not dynamic. This is intended to be a prestige Chardonnay, yet while it has mouthfeel there’s not a whole lot of zest or character.

Not exactly sleek but if you’re O.K. with better than average size, sweetness and heat, it’s more than fine. Aromas of sweet black plums are soft and stewy, yet the palate remains racy, with nervy cherry and raspberry flavors. A solid wine with just enough grit and bite. Harsh and burnt-smelling, with beet-like flavors and too much body weight. One could argue that it gets better as it airs out, but nobody should have to wrestle with a rosé just to get something likable from it. Past its prime with nowhere to go.

Controlled, slightly leathery, honest and nice overall. A mix of black cherries and herbal aromas ride the bouquet, while the palate is earthy and shows plum and mild tomato flavors. A good mouthfeel that’s more racy than outright heavy allows the wine to cleanse and not overwhelm what you’re eating.

This well-priced red from Tarragona shows a glimpse of what the Montsant region can produce. The nose is all red fruit, with a splinter of oak. The palate is chunky and easy as it deals blackberry and raspberry in spades. Chocolate and mocha on the thick finish should please the sugar mavens.

With spice, raisin and driving dark-fruit aromas, this sweetie is lifted and enticing on the bouquet. Big, rowdy and complex in the mouth, with layered cherry, cough drop and kirsch flavors. This old-vine Grenache is unique and surprising, with its touch of lilac and currant on the nose, followed by full-bodied, lush berry and currant flavors. Still young and jumpy, but the ripeness and pedigree of this Penedès bruiser is beyond reproach. Saturated and dense, but youthful as well as a few shades shy of refined. There’s herbal essence to the flavor profile, but there’s also bold and tasty cassis and black plum. The finish is chewy and a bit spicy, and overall you’d have to label it rich and full.

This Freixenet-owned label from Montsant opts to use Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot in the blend, and hence the wine is very red in color and rather weighty. One of the best of the region, with supreme concentration and style. It’s mostly Syrah, and the color is piercing purple. On the nose, it’s a touch granular and nutty at first, but eventually dark, meaty black fruit emerges. Tons of black cherry and heft on the palate, with a lasting, smoky finish. More basic and strained than prior wines from this producer. The nose is rubbery and cheesy at first, with leather and blackberry. Hard, tannic and acidic as well, and only a little softer with airing. Flavors are of snappy, tough cherry and berry, and the finish shows tannic bite. Sweet red-fruit and red-licorice aromas are attractive and round. The palate of peppy cranberry and plum is moderately tart, although it opens up and gets much friendlier if given time. This is small-production, old-vines Cariñena with the full allotment of French oak aging. Modern in terms of its forward oak, extraction and deep color. The nose is packed with charcoal, tobacco and pepper, while the fresh, forward palate pushes cherry cola and baked fruit. The wine sounds pretty impressive: It’s comprised of local Catalan grape varities Monastrell, Garnacha Tinta, Garró, Samsó and Cariñena, which are all grown at Grans Muralles, a single vineyard that dates back to the Middle Ages. And very good it is, though it doesn’t taste as singular as its heritage suggests. Black plum and cherry notes are couched in brambly, oak flavors. Violet in color, with burnt rubber, cherry and plum on the lively nose. Things go south from there, however, as the palate is too snappy and austere to support the flavors. It’s 90% Carignan and much like a tart Italian Dolcetto. Imported by Hand Picked Selections.

Quite sweet and borderline raisiny on the nose, yet red and tart in the mouth, with pie cherry and red raspberry flavors. Quite basic and straightforward, with a touch of green spiciness to the racy finish.

Though handsomely balanced, this medium-weight Chardonnay shows only modest complexity, with apple, tropical fruit and mild toasty notes on the nose and palate. A slight caramel note gives a vaguely sweet cast to the basically dry fruit flavors. Has appeal and some length, but it’s not the statement one would expect at the price. —M.M.

Subtle and balanced, and may show best with plenty of airing and/or decanting. In the meantime, expect modest plummy sweetness with a smack of herbal offset. It’s more simple and statuesque than lively or attention-grabbing. A Europvin, Christopher Cannan selection; Imported by multiple importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines.

Sometimes concept exceeds the wine itself, and this may be a case in point. The blend is odd, and the fact that each grape comes from a different part of Spain is potentially more odd. As for the wine, it has a nice perfume to it, courtesy of the Rhone varieties in the mix. And while the cherry/berry fruit is forward, it’s maybe too sweet and basic in terms of length, structure and mouthfeel. Still, it’s worth a try for the experimental tasters out there.

Reddish in color, with full-blast plum and candied apple aromas. It looks like a lug in the glass, but in the mouth it’s more refined and lean, with slightly pickled strawberry flavors leading to a citrus and scallion finish. Plenty of zest and citric acid despite the ominous color.

A powerful, pretty wine with much of the qualities of a high-end Priorat, (Which makes sense because Montsant is right next door to Priorat.) it offers a bottomless nose of deep red fruit and flowers. That’s matched by the palate, which is ripe and everlasting as it transitions to the spicy, complex finish.

Black fruit, licorice and earth are all aromas of classic Montsant, and together they are easy to enjoy and understand. Ripe black cherry, pepper and an undercurrent of licorice and coffee work the palate, while the finish sports tight acids and smooth tannins. Good now through 2009.

After a couple of rough years, all Fluminus needed was the good 2004 vintage. And the result is splendid. This blend of Cab, Garnacha and Carignan is pure as can be, with polished leather and fine tobacco aromas entering the fray. The whole is complete and big-boned, but in the end it’s more tight and compact than plush. Give it two years to show its best side.

Spicy strawberries on the nose lead straight to a full-bodied, totally balanced and healthy palate that is eager to deliver zesty raspberry and tea-like flavors. Not hard to enjoy, with peppery rosé tannins and good length. Freshness is key to this wine, and as of June 2007 it was drinking perfectly. Imported by Freixenet USA.

Definite presence of oak on the nose with rich caramel notes as well as notes of fresh-cut grass and a lemon squeeze. The white blend hits your palate crisp and clean and transforms into a silky lemon cream pie and then slowly melts down your throat into oblivion. A very nice all around blend but some minor rough notes on the top of the palate during the finish. Surprising for a wine that has undergone some apparent malolactic fermentation. Pair with a pasta pomodoro with a fresh crostini brushed with fresh olive oil and garlic.

Intense golden colour with a delicate crown. On the nose, very yeasty with creamy aged notes and hints of peach. Elucid mousse and well-placed acidity supports the minerality and brief, crisp finish. Like a good liberal arts degree, this wine is well-rounded in all categories. Pair with a spinach salad with toasted almonds, dried cranberries, green onions and a light sesame vinagrette.

Perfectly balanced between acidity and fruit, body and elegance; this wine was like a super model with a degree in astrophysics who likes to watch football. The lemon green colour and vibrant bubble formation, enticed you to sip, and the dried fruits and notes of honeysuckle, fresh lemon curd and citrus kept you interested. Supple acidity lifted the fruit and rounded out into a delicate, refined finish.

Quick dispersion of bubbles in the glass...(and no one likes a premature disperson). Aromas of kiwi and white peach and supported by a overtones of burnt toast that provide a veritable cornucopia of flavors and textures. Although lacking in bubbles in the glass, the mousse has a subtle and creamy feel. Flavours of pineapple with a sweetness on the aftertaste. Well balanced acidity and body gives a weighty character to the wine. Pair with a fresh peach ice cream on a pastry.

Light pale lemon green with a consistant fine bead of bubbles. Aromas of dried fruits, almonds and light toasty notes. Excellent balance between the acidity and sweetness with a smooth, sweet finish. Flavours of sultanas, sweet pineapple and felt as though you were walking through a patisserie with sweet, candied notes. Pair with a nice Manchego on fresh crostini.

Has a beautiful salmon color and tiny micro-bubbles rising to the top of the glass. Starts with a semi-dry mouthfeel and light effervescence and then continues to peel back layers of soft, delicate red fruits (cherry, plum, raspberry). Hits the palate in all the right ways with all the right balance. This is a wine for hedonists looking for instant gratification...you won't be dissatisfied! Pair with lightly grilled salmon in a lemon/butter sauce finished with fresh dill.

The age of this wine has given rise to a rusty/garnet color and beautiful baked brambly berry notes with a hint of limestone soil on the nose. This wine has held up considerably well and has another 5 or so years of life in it. Time has done it well to wrap all of the earth and fruit together into one seamless tasting experience! Pair with a venison tenderloin prepared medium rare with a sherry reduction or cranberry relish.

Beautiful aromas of buttery strawberry shortcake and has lovely flavors of strawberries and Tahitian vanilla. Smooth, silky finish with balanced acidity for a Brut Nature Reserva. It is reminiscent of walking past the neighborhood patisserie with fresh baked goods placed in the window. Drink as a liquid dessert or with...you guessed it...strawberry shortcake.

Had this at a Spanish Wine tasting recently and I thought it was decent but for $10.00 I thought, why not take a bottle home? Upon popping it open, I am hit with a slighty musty scent. I let it breathe for about an hour while preparing some food and when I get back to it and pour myself a glass, I am pleasantly surprised. It's got a good plum looking color, and is almost totally opaque. The nose shows some earthy tones, maybe some blackberry or rapspberry with burnt wood and hints of tobacco which I immediately equate to "Old vine." I have a sip and decide this is just a fantastic wine, there is smoky dark fruit taste going on, a little dry but a good strong aftertaste that hangs around for a good while with that grape/berry flavor. It's got a great balance between the earthy-ness without tasting too musty and the fruit plays off of it just perfectly. The more I let this breathe, the better it gets. With all of the earthy tones, I will probably enjoy this again with something prepared with herbs (lamb maybe?) but even if it's on it's own, I thought this wine was a winner.

Note's relate to earlier vintage (2002, 2000). Priorat wines are to Spain today what Tuscan wines were to Italy in the late 80's early 90's. Alvaro Palacio is an excellent winemaker to start with if you haven't tried a Priorat yet. Their most popular red blend, Las Terrases, mixes 5-6 different varietals with Carmenere making up the foundation. It has luscious dark fruit flavors surrounded by hints of lighter fruits like apricot, an excellent balance of earthiness, and a soft but lingering finish. It is the style that explains why wines from Priorat are my favorite. The best way I can describe the essence of these wines is to thing of a coffee bean dipped in dark chocolate stuffed in a raspberry, stuffed in a dark cherry that's then stuffed in a kiwi.

Ruby in color with brick rim and some sediment, this medium-plus bodied red from reliable Spanish importer Eric Solomon is tasty and rustic, if not earth-shatteringly interesting. The nose is enticing with notes of anise seed, white pepper (Northern Rhone-reminiscent), bay leaf, black cherry, a hint of cumin and quite a bit of alcohol heat. As well, a touch of red licorice that usually means American oak to me (they def used it, along with a little French bois, for 9 months). The palate delivers meaty notes alongside a woodsy character and a little more of the pepper we saw on the nose. The tannins are a little chalky on the finish, contributing to the "rustic" quality of this wine, but overall it's pleasant if a little "gnarly." Try it with roast game, fennel-sausage pizza or some hearty tapas.
