Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With fruit from coastal Leyda in the blend, this Curicó wine surprises with crisp, focused understatement. The mouth is fresh but basic, with juicy, perky apple and citrus flavors followed by a crisp, slightly pithy finish. Overachieves in the context of Echeverria’s past Sauvignon Blancs.

Dark as night, with mildly leafy, herbal, varietally appropriate aromas of olive, earth, tea and black fruits. The palate is big but nicely chiseled, with good acidity and tannic support for roasted berry, plum, fig and peppery flavors. A smooth, correct high-end Carmenère. Drink now through 2013.

Dark and woody, with toasty berry flavors and tons of coffee, toast and length to the finish. That all sounds fine and dandy, but the issue that keeps this wine from rising higher is overwrought, burning acidity. It just has too much zest and sizzle in the midpalate, and thus begs for food.

Perfectly open and huge, with deep plum and black fruit smothering both the bouquet and palate. Over the past couple of years this wine has distinguished itself as a bruiser with charm. And while it may show very little in common with Rhône-style Syrah, for a Chilean version it rocks. Look for huge berry flavors and excellent balancing acids and tannins.

Lots of popcorn and butter on the nose, with more butter along with lemon and apple on the palate. This is a soft, rich wine without a lot of driving acids to spunk things up. Turns increasingly creamy on the finish. Imported by Banfi Vintners.

Some of the best-bred Carmenères in the world are grown in Peumo, and a star example is this saturated, minty wine with medium-weight tannins and a long finish. It’s lush, powerful and along the way you taste pepper, chocolate, berries and sunshine.

An eye-opener; this fat, yummy late-harvest SB from the Curico Valley is a big-time surprise. Who could expect such intriguing aromas of chirimoya, peach and cinnamon? And the palate is gorged with fig, date and honey flavors. The only downside is that it’s a little cloying as it warms.

Aromas of fresh-squeezed orange juice and chewable children’s vitamins attest to the fact there’s no oak to be found. Along the way are soft citrus and melon flavors, and a chalky but thin finish.

The Massenez family from Alsace is to thank for this Bordeaux blend, which offers fleshy, dusty black-plum and red-berry fruit flavors, and a medium-long finish rife with oak and red berry. The nice nougaty-marscapone aromas are unfortunately overtaken by oak.

Mature, with notes of raisin, leather and tree bark. For an aged reserve-level Chilean Cab, it impresses. The palate still holds some cedary notes, but there’s depth and nuance and fruit as well. A serious wine with warmth, structure and just enough sly fruit to earn its mark.
