As the production on this wine climbs (it’s up to 35,000 cases now), the final product becomes more generic. An opening of bold berry fruit comes with a pounding mix of oaky vanilla and milk chocolate, while the palate has acidity for zest but also a lot of creamy oak. Very oaky on the finish, leaving a lasting impression that’s more about resin and vanilla than fruit or individuality.

For serious Carmenère, Carmín is at the top of the list. It’s almost late-harvest in terms of richness and ripeness, with earth, leather, mineral, pepper, plum and berry on the nose. Dense and balanced, yet a little on the soft side, with meaty raspberry and plum flavors. Finishes dark, with coffee, toast and leather. A cuddly, chewy wine to drink now for all its power and richness.

Like always, this Merlot is a potent brew of dark fruit, molasses, peppery spice and Chilean terroir. The plush palate is extremely ripe and forward, as it offers mounds of berries and chocolate. New World at every turn, and what’s wrong with that? 38,000 cases produced, so it’s available.

Thick and rich, with hedonistic black-fruit aromas and all the accents of leather, tobacco and olive that come with a great Chilean Cabernet. In the mouth, everything comes together in a commendable knit, and it doesn’t sacrifice anything, be it berry fruit, herbal accents, tannic grip or acidity. Drink now through 2013.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts with intense black-fruit aromas and dark, smoky accents as well as baked berries, licorice and meat. In the mouth, it’s a bit clumsy and amped up, with big tannins, extract and a mouthfeel that grabs. Flavors of berry fruit and mint are good, while the finish bounces toward a loud finish. Not what you’d call an elegant wine; it’s more about ripeness, power and extract.

Every year one of Chile’s most earnestly made Carmenères is Terrunyo, and the 2004, while a touch softer and less focused than the ’03, is still a very nice wine that offers the best this grape can deliver. It’s a plump internationally-styled red with berry syrup and chocolate flavors, while the finish is rich, chewy and smooth. Drink now through 2008.

The old-vine name is French, as are the estate owners, and the wine itself is pretty good despite being a bit thick, chewy and aimless. The nose is full but nondescript, while apple and oak-driven flavors define the palate. The finish is textured and woody. Mouthfeel is its primary attribute while interesting or unusual tastes prove elusive.

Big, stout and solid, with a smoky, pure-fruit nose that’s very attractive. Lush and full in the mouth, with pure, deep, intoxicating flavors of blackberrry, black currant and Mediterranean black olive. Solid throughout and holds its form across the finish. Ripe, smooth and delicious. Drink now thru 2012.

Muscled up and dark, with robust blackberry, tar, spice and mocha aromas. The palate is big and dense but raring to run, with smashing black cherry, berry and black plum lushness. Turns more oaky on the finish, with coconut and mocha. Impressive for New World Syrah. Drink now through 2013.

Ripe with a touch of maple on the nose. The rest of the bouquet is deep and dark, with a focus on chocolate and prune. Round in the mouth, but fairly tight and structured, with flavors of black fruits, coffee and mocha. No shortage of oak and length, but a little herbal toward the end. A mix of 75% Cabernet, 18% Carmenère and 7% Cab Franc.

With hints of mineral, stone and lively white fruit, this Chard gives off a solid nose that rings true. The palate is alert, with good acidity pressing orange, citrus pith, banana and vanilla flavors. It’s fairly monotonous on the finish, with dry citrus and not much else.

Setting a new high bar for Carmenère is this luxury version from Concha y Toro’s Cachapoal vineyard. And while it deserves to be drunk sooner than later, we recommend it for the best steak you grill this year. It’s a strapped, juicy wine with tons of coffee, chocolate and berry essence. It’s too hard or layered, so get at it soon for its up-front fruit and character.

A bit dense, with prune and mint aromas. Limited in scope and depth; what's here is deep but monotone. Flavors of boysenberry and black plum are heavy and soft, while chocolate brings up the rear. Short in structure and tannins, but dense enough to match a rich weeknight dinner.

Seems as though Echeverria’s idea of reserve Sauvignon is to let the grapes stay on the vines for too long. The wine lacks expression and a pulse. It’s borderline DOA, in fact; the regular 2006 Sauvignon Blanc is livelier.

Full and dark, with meaty aromas that can’t be overlooked. The palate is rich and round, teetering on lush but with enough acidity to keep it on an even keel. And the flavors of wild berries and cassis are chewy and satisfying. Starts off stronger than it finishes, but still quite good as a whole.

If Carmenère is going to attract a global following, it’s going to do it on the backs of wines like this. Made from grapes hailing predominantly from a subsection of the Rapel Valley, this is a thick, earthy, meaty wine with sweet and chewy black plums and ripe cherries at its core. The mouthfeel is a tad leathery, with a very firm grip. With about 15% Maipo Cabernet blended in, it’s just about perfect, without any hint of green.

Powerful on the nose, packed with aromas of black olive, plum and herbs. This is a staunch wine that’s 75% Carmenère with 20% Syrah and then Carignan; it is snappy and lively, with no shortage of wild berry and plum flavors. The finish holds on for some time, and overall it is very respectable Carmenère.

Berry aromas are followed by a round, wholesomeness that can’t be criticized. The palate is unlike many a Carmenère because it eschews the herbal, green element that’s inherent to the grape, and instead offers plum, blackberry and all the richness one can conjure. A round, finish of light oak and vanilla seals it all in fine fashion. Surely the most jammy, expressive and pure Carmenère that Chile has to offer.

Rich and stylish on one hand, and brawny and bold on the other. This saturated, meaty bruiser starts with dark plum, cassis and eucalyptus aromas. As in previous years, this wine delivers earthy, proprietary aromas and flavors on a structured frame. Once upon a time this Concha y Toro label was a Best Buy regular. At $21 it no longer qualifies, but it’s every bit an excellent wine in 2006. Yellow Delicious apple and melon aromas start it off in a fruity direction, and the palate shows peach and pear flavors. With no oak, there’s no butter, toast or resin to speak of. Strongly scented, with powerful aromas of coconut, dill, vanilla and raspberry. Like all Marqués de Casa Concha wines, this Syrah from Peumo is saturated and full-force. Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lots of popcorn and butter on the nose, with more butter along with lemon and apple on the palate. This is a soft, rich wine without a lot of driving acids to spunk things up. Turns increasingly creamy on the finish. Imported by Banfi Vintners.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Some of the best-bred Carmenères in the world are grown in Peumo, and a star example is this saturated, minty wine with medium-weight tannins and a long finish. It’s lush, powerful and along the way you taste pepper, chocolate, berries and sunshine.

An eye-opener; this fat, yummy late-harvest SB from the Curico Valley is a big-time surprise. Who could expect such intriguing aromas of chirimoya, peach and cinnamon? And the palate is gorged with fig, date and honey flavors. The only downside is that it’s a little cloying as it warms.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aromas of fresh-squeezed orange juice and chewable children’s vitamins attest to the fact there’s no oak to be found. Along the way are soft citrus and melon flavors, and a chalky but thin finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Massenez family from Alsace is to thank for this Bordeaux blend, which offers fleshy, dusty black-plum and red-berry fruit flavors, and a medium-long finish rife with oak and red berry. The nice nougaty-marscapone aromas are unfortunately overtaken by oak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Mature, with notes of raisin, leather and tree bark. For an aged reserve-level Chilean Cab, it impresses. The palate still holds some cedary notes, but there’s depth and nuance and fruit as well. A serious wine with warmth, structure and just enough sly fruit to earn its mark.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very modern and ripe, with syrupy black fruit crawling all over the beefy nose and onto the chewy palate. Flavors of black cherry and raspberry are live-wire and alert; they are supported by solid tannins and fine acidity. This wine gets better each time we try it. It has a lot of what most folks want in Syrah: flashy fruit and depth. Imported by Banfi Vintners.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Mildly candied and medicinal on the nose, but ripe across the palate. Berry and cassis flavors are supported by firm, stocky tannins. There’s coffee, tobacco and wood resin on the finish, and it could probably use another year or so in bottle to lose its bite. Best in late 2008. Imported by Orvino Imports.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoky, rubbery and sweet on the nose, with mocha and caramel shadings. The palate, however, is more tight and narrow; the feel is fresh and blazing, while the flavors are piercing and suggest red fruits like cranberry and cherry. Citric but with just enough weight to register as true Cabernet (with 18% Carmenère and 7% Cab Franc).

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A little wild and funky at first, but airing reveals smoky, round aromas of berries and rubber. The palate is quite bright and vibrant, as it shows solid berry flavors bolstered by pulsing acidity. Full, saturated and satisfying. Offers commendable depth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
If oak is your thing, this has plenty of it. The nose is heavily toasted and the palate is loaded with cinnamon, nuts and wood spice. But in between the layers of oak there’s nectarine, peach and tropical fruit flavors that are of high quality. Drink as soon as possible; the wine is beginning to soften and lose its snap.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A huge expression of Chilean Cab, which if you know the wine, is to be expected. Terrunyo pushes deep blackberry and violets on the nose, while the palate bursts with acidity that propels lasting dark flavors. On the spot, with a lot of heft and extraction. Imported by Banfi Vintners.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Stocky, meaty and full on the nose, and despite a hint of leafy, herbal green it’s a more than solid offering. Black cherry and herbal flavors are generous, while the finish is full and competent. Shows good overall quality and solidity compared to prior vintages.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pleasant aromas of earth and peanuts are tight on fruit, but the fruit comes through on the palate where you get potent plums and currants. The wine is very smooth, as all of its components are in balance, then finishes long.

This is everything I could hope for in a Cabernet. Absolutely fabulous wine with layers of complexity. It's no wonder that year after year this is one of the top scoring Chilean wines. Aromas of dark fruit and currant. Beautiful structure and soft tannins. A slight hint of smokiness. This wine is drinking nicely after ten years.

fruit, but you've convinced me. Thanks!

The Don Melchor by Concha y Toro is another Chilean
classic. It competes with the $100 Napa cabs at a
fraction of the price. Can also usually be found at
Costco!

Opulent nose of blackcurrant and tar/asphalt/coffee. Sharp blackcurrant attack, with firm tannins. Went very well with a burger. Plenty of cedar, tobacco. Less fruity than many CA cabs. Some pencil lead, overall well balanced. I think very good to excellent QPR, and would buy again.
