Light buttery and grilled peach aromas mingle with softer notes of pear and orange rind. The full weight mouth offers more hazelnut and graham cracker flavors that stick all the way through the close. Round but balanced and not overdone.

Accessible, medium-weight, and in the international style. The typical South African earth and iodine notes are nicely tamed here. They compliment rather than obscure the dry, dark berry fruit, offering just enough character keep this from being generic. Finishes with cocoa hints.

Fragrant and very well-balanced, this opens with a grapefruit, grass and mild tropical fruit nose. It’s even and full on the tongue, with a ripe melon-spice palate. The long, smooth finish has a melony feel and tangerine hints. Shows fine Sauvignon Blanc character and avoids edgy, exaggerated herbaceousness. Best Buy. —M.M.

The nose on this wine impresses from the start, with its clean aromas of apples, spice and citrus. On the palate, an attractive balance of minerality and refreshing fruit triumphs. Not terribly complex, but fun and exciting.

The Z has a big nose of red fruit, spicy wood and pepper, and on the palate, it’s equally alluring and masculine, with flavors of smoke, mint and spice. The wine is elegant but upfront, and could use some time to age and settle into its full potential. A collectible, serious wine that will pair well with beef and equally hearty dishes.

While this is certainly on the higher end of South African Shiraz price points, it’s worth the investment. The intense bouquet is loaded with rich dark cherry, raspberry, sweet spice and small wild strawberries. All-spice and pepper dominate the creamy mouth, with opulent flavors of meaty plum, roasted espresso and black cherry guts. Full and powerful in the mouth with a strong vanilla-accented finish. Delicious now but worthy of cellar time as well.

Here’s a bright Sauvignon Blanc with appealing accents of baby powder and orange blossom running through the dominant nectarine and tangerine aromas and flavors. The mouth is surprisingly round but the finish is mouthwatering and clean.

Clean, bright peach-like aromas precede a tight, acidic, well-defined palate that opens significantly with just five minutes of airing. This will work wonders with Asian appetizers because it’s round, weighty and citrusy. If South Africa is to have a signature white, it may as well be this tasty style of Chenin Blanc. Best Buy. ––M.S.
