A bit of a disappointment from this winery, but the flavors here seem a touch overripe, with pruny notes intruding into the blackberries. Obvious American oak marks the nose with herbal, dill-like notes and the finish with dry, woody tannins and caramel flavors. Imported by Supreme Wines & Spirits.

Smooth, creamy wine, its fruit layered with toast and piquant spices. The yellow fruit flavors are contrasted with acidity from a pink grapefruit freshness. It should be aged for another year.

This Douro red speaks clearly of its origins, blending anise and mineral notes with ripe fruit. Resin and spice notes add interest to the black cherry flavors, backed by just a hint of toasty oak. Structured and firm, this wine could use a bit more lushness and flesh, but nicely conveys its sense of place. Imported by Supreme Wines & Spirits.

Smooth, soft wine, very accessible and up-front. The stewed fruit flavors and fresh acidity give an attractive lift to this open wine.

A fresh, lively, citrus-flavored wine with touches of white peaches and a soft structure. Give this 6 months in bottle for the freshness to peak.

One of a range of wines from different regions, but all called Callabriga. This wine comes from Sogrape’s Quinta da Leda in the Douro. It is a big, burly wine, packed with solid, dense and ripe fruit. Black plums and figs and a sweet core of dark tannins emerge from a structure that is still young. Age for 3–4 years.

Initially austere, with strong mineral character, this opens up to give bramble fruits, dense tannins and firm structure. The fruit does show some juicy freshness, but the tannins are the key here to a wine that needs 3–4 years aging.

Not up to the level of the single-variety bottlings, but still a decent drink, this offering from Quinta de Ventezelo offers coffee and roasted marshmallows layered over some rather herbal cherry fruit. Green and astringent on the finish. Imported by Supreme Wines & Spirits.

Already a modern classic of the Douro, this red wine from Niepoort, with its baked apple and blackberry aromas, is intensely fruity and rounded with sweet wood, black plum and jelly flavors. The texture is smooth, soft, perhaps just missing a grip of tannin.
