Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Lurton brothers, who make wines from France to South America, have now started to produce two Douro wines, with the help, they say, of the Lavradores de Feitoria group of producers. This is the simpler of the two wines, dominated by spicy flavors, very soft and round, ready to drink now.

A big, fruity wine that starts richly and then becomes drier, more tannic and firmer. The fruit is all black, full of berries and fresh acidity. Finely balanced, with an herbal character to finish it off.

This joint venture between the Roquette family of Quinta do Crasto and the Cazes family of Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, is a stunning evocation of the schist soils of the Douro. It is uncompromising, with firm, dark tannins. In a classic Bordeaux way, it is still young, the structure dominant and impressive.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The attractive Quinta de la Rosa, at Pinhão, under the ownership of the Bergqvist family, is aquiring a good name for its table wines as well as its Ports. This vintage has delicious, ripe, sweet fruit on the nose and fine forward fruit and sweetness. The ripeness and almost-jelly juiciness give a real sense of the wine being made from serious Port fruit. —R.V.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Wonderfully balanced and structured, this is a wine that gives a complete series of flavors from chocolate, black stone fruits, layers of wood and finally the essential acidity. Its texture is grainy, dusty, firm and ready to age for several years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The darkest, most impressive version of the Duas Quintas brand, this Reserva is made in the open lagars, from foot-trodden grapes in the tradition still used by major Port houses. It gives a ripe, sweet, almost Port-like character, but still firmed by structure and dusty tannins to go with the superripe plums.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A new joint venture between winemaker Jorge Moreira and owner the Bergqvist family, both of Quinta de la Rosa. The vineyard is in the remote Douro Superior. You can certainly smell the dry heat in this young wine. To taste it has a Port-like smoothness overlying its dry tannins. The fruit is sweet, succulent, layered with blackberry jam and dark berries.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lush yellow fruits shimmy through the toast character of this wine. It is certainly rich and full, but structured with a good dose of acidity. This is ripe, rich, suggesting increasing complexity in the next few years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Powerful, ripe wine with black fruits and a great swathe of dark tannins. The flavors of berries, black plums, black figs and sage are echoed by the warm, herbal and wild flower aromas. This is a big wine, which needs at least a year to age.
