This is 100% Syrah from Kiona vineyards, on Red Mountain. It pins the meter at 15% alcohol without tiring out the palate. Silky and substantial, with flavors of raspberry, black cherry and red licorice, and scents of violets, rose petals and hints of cracked pepper.

There is just 9% Cabernet in the blend. Smooth and light, with lean flavors showing herb and bark. The tannins have a green edge to them, and perhaps as a result, the vanilla flavors seem to stick out rather awkwardly.

Ripe and fruity, loaded with soft, plush, blackberry/black cherry fruit. This is a sweet, soft, open and forward style—a rather dramatic shift in style that was sparked, no doubt, by newly-installed, California-trained winemaker Bob Bertheau, who guided this vintage from the start. Though delicious and ripe, it could stand to be tightened up a bit.

Features beautiful integration of oak spice and waxy, pear-like fruit. Seamless and multidimensional, the flavors unfold in your mouth and seduce you with their balance, lingering gently on the finish.

This is Merlot, with a little Cab Franc and Malbec in the blend; fragrant and soft, with incense and cinnamon in the nose and the mouth. The fruit is dark–– blackberry and black cherry––and the tannins lightly grainy. A nice toasty finish and a lick of espresso firm it up through the finish.

Opens with broad, rich flavors of black cherry, but then turns one-dimensional. The finish hits a wall, with tannins still herbal and not quite ripe.

Young, sharp, and spicy, with underlying layers of peach, apricot, Meyer lemon, butter and caramel. This clearly needs a lot more cellar time to reach its full potential, but it is already a lovely wine to sip at meal’s end.

A young wine, this is still resolving itself in the bottle, with astringent tannins, a hint of sweet cracker and rich, raspberry fruit flavors drenched in wet stone. Good concentration and persistence, with threads of moist earth, cola and tanned leather.

A good, hearty, substantial Lemberger, brimming with plush boysenberry fruit dotted with black pepper. It’s broadly tannic, certainly one of the best Lems in Washington.

This wine captures the particular spicy, citrus character of Wahluke Slope Syrah. Though it doesn’t quite get there texturally, it starts off well with a burst of smoked meat and high-toned cherry fruit. There’s a streak of mint also, and that, plus the deep, almost black hue, suggests that more concentrated fruit will follow.
