Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though the aromas and flavors are really nice, this wine’s flat, woody feel keeps it from being as excellent as it could be. It starts off with black olive and eucalyptus on the nose, and brings black cherry, plum, herb and eucalyptus on the palate. Good acids; an even, balanced wine. Imported by USA Wine West.

This softly structured, user-friendly Chard boasts prototypical barrel-fermented notes of cashews, buttered toast and grilled peaches, carried along by a full-bodied, lush mouthfeel. Finishes long, with well integrated oak. Drink now.

Philip Shaw Chardonnay - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As you might expect, the cool climate has led to the development of weedy, tobacco aromas and flavors, backed by cassis. A bit broader and fleshier than the Merlot, but still crisply acidic on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Shiraz’s spicy aromas were identified as barbecue marinade by one reviewer, and black pepper by another. Add spiciness to leather, caramel, coffee and earth—no one identified the bouquet as outwardly fruity—and you’ve got a winning opening to an excellent wine. Stably cedar palate, plus tart cherry, herb and sweet caramel notes; a tad lean in the mouth, but smooth nontheless. Finishes with firm tannins, hay and cedar. Top Value.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Merlot shows its cool-region influence in its olivaceous flavors tinged with coffee, roasted bell pepper and eucalyptus. It’s firmly built and will ably partner burgers or roasts, but will never be charming.

Smells and tastes like the fruit juice blends that kids drink—those mixes of peach, pear, apple, and other non-grape fruits. Add in an industrial-chalk note and you get a Shiraz that doesn’t much taste like a Shiraz, or any red wine, for that matter.

A crisp, light-bodied Pinot Noir that shows decent varietal character but only modest intensity, Hungerford Hill’s 2005 bottling features hints of chocolate and cedar layered over delicate cherry fruit.

The notes here are somewhat discordant—like two parts of an orchestra a touch out of sync. First up are some lovely aromas of smoke, grilled nuts, pear and citrus. Then there’s a bit of overly sweet fruit on the palate, and a tart, chalky finish that brings things to a close. It’s not clear where this is headed, although it does give some pleasure now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoke and wood set off approachable yellow fruit on the palate, both of which follow through to the finish. Smoke, biscuit and white pepper aromas don’t make it to the palate, but were nice while they lasted.

Has a dryish, spritzy mouthfeel and flavors of unripe melon and stone fruits that vanish more quickly than we’d like. The nose has both light, feminine notes (apricot, honey) and more masculine scents of beef and musk. This Sauvignon was reviewed by two editors, with consistent notes.
