Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Unusually lush, even for this vintage, it starts with pronounced aromas of limes and lemons, fresh green apples, and juniper berries, and turns luscious in the mouth. Partial barrel fermentation and lees aging create a creamy, smoky mouthfeel, while the fruity flavors are volcanic. But it’s dry and elegant. Virtually flawness Sauvignon Blanc.

Pencarrow is Palliser’s second label, which helps explain this wine’s lack of body; presumably the richer lots went into the Palliser Estate bottling (not yet tasted). That said, it offers pretty cherry and herb flavors and a lingering finish.

This producer is turning out some interesting wines. The 2002 Merlot displays slightly candied cherry flavors along with a lactic note that brings to mind cherry cheesecake. Picks up hints of lemon and mocha on the tart finish.

From Craggy’s own Pinot Noir vineyard, this medium-bodied, creamy-textured effort boasts bright, vibrant aromas of cherries and vanilla. It comes across as soft and easy but not unstructured, with plenty of persistence and elegance. Drink now–2012.

It's the rare NZ Riesling we see in this country that's from Martinborough, but Nga Waka's 2001 makes a strong case for the continued production of Riesling in an area that's better known for Burgundian varieties. Floral on the nose, with bright citrusy fruit on the palate and almost ephemerally light, this is an ideal aperitif wine.

Pretty standard in terms of flavor profile, but well-executed, marrying toasty, pain grille aromas with flavors of vanilla, ripe pears and melon. Medium- to full-bodied, it finishes with a flourish of oak and spice.

The 2009 vintage is shaping up to be a good one for Martinborough Pinot Noir, and this bottling is nicely priced for the quality. It’s herbal, spicy, floral and savory all at once on the nose, then delivers soft waves of dark cherries on the palate. Drink now–2016.

Starts off with toasted almond, pear and citrus aromas, evolving into pear and orange in the mouth. This medium-weight Chard is a nice drink that finishes with some slightly aggressive wood and a trace of grapefruit.

This may not be as long-lived as its Matés’s Vineyard stablemate, but is it ever luscious now. Toasty, mealy aromas carry hints of roasted nuts, but this flamboyantly oaky wine features fruit to spare, adding layers of apple and citrus flavors that round out the wine without becoming soft or flabby. Drink now. Imported by Wilson Daniels Ltd.

At less than one-third the price of Escarpment’s single-vineyard wines, this is a great Pinot Noir value. Ripe cherries and plums make a full impression on the palate, and while the flavors could use a touch more complexity, the wine offers a big mouthful of authentic Pinot Noir.
