Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Brooding black fruit with waves of savory spice start this wine out well. The spicy but juicy black fruit flavors are integrated and soft. The wine has depth and an elegant demeanor but fun, upfront fruit at the same time. An interesting sip for myriad beef and lamb dishes.

The exuberant character of this sparkler starts with the bright aromas of apple, pear, lemon and nuts. On the palate, there are crisp notes of citrus and more toasty spice. A clean, approachable wine to pair with salads, spicy cuisine.

Nicely structured, but where’s the fruit? Despite a rich, dark color, the flavors are of tobacco, earth and menthol. Drying tannins on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tart and crisp, yet with surprisingly supple tannins. Intense tobacco and herb notes alongside red plum flavors in this medium-weight blend of 50% Merlot, 22% Petit Verdot, 18% Tannat and 10% Malbec.

Smoke and toast complement a restrained cassis-scented nose. On the lean-earthy-herbal side of the Cabernet spectrum, but has enough stuffing and charm to remain interesting.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This red starts with a nose of allspice, clove and cherry. Cherry, pepper and spice follow on the palate. The wine is balanced but lacks the structure of an ageable Cabernet. Pair with grilled meat or stews.

A nose of creamy toast and spice leads this round, smooth Chardonnay. Full and weighty on the palate with a pert, spicy spin, the wine is dependable and serious.

Most P.G.s from appellations beginning with V came from Venezia or the Veneto. Here’s one from Virginia. Bright fruit aromas announce this clean and bold contender. Looks spritzy, but it’s just a little tangy on the palate. Medium mouthfeel with fine balance. Bellissimo, y’all.

Lovingston’s medium-bodied Bordeaux Blend is pleasantly grapy on the nose with an undertone of darkly toasted oak, nuts and savory spices. The palate holds a decent amount of black fruit, but with a green, underripe vein and fairly high level of acidity and tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cherry pie-filling and boysenberry notes open this impressive blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Abundant but velvety tannins give a lift to blueberry and chocolate tones in the mouth, while the slightly grippy finish shows appealing mixed berry flavors.
