This will be a killer event. The first stateside tasting of the acclaimed 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Taste 100+ top Grand Crus Chateaux including Leóville Barton, Gloria, Batailley, Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Lynch Bages, Orme de Pez, Pichon Longueville, Prieuré-Lichine.

With Merlot as the lead variety, this wine is soft and approachable; its savory, ripe plum flavors are enhanced by 18 months aging in French oak barrels. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec give this composition full-bodied complexity that pairs artfully with food, especially when enjoyed with good company in beautiful settings.

I tasted this wine in Paris last night with some friends. Very surprising with delicate fruit aromas and subtle hints of vanilla oak. It was great ! Shame we only had one bottle...

I found Chateau Landat to be dusty, earthy, and full of ripe plum with a bit of tobacco. Chateau Landat is located in the Cissac part of Haut-Medoc, which is nestled between Paulliac and St. Estephe, so the wine itself is probably drawing from St. Estephe’s rustic feel and Paulliac’s bold fruit. While I liked Chateau Landat, I feel there’s something missing, and I think it’s structure. It’s a little monolithic and it took a good hour and some change to smooth out the tannins. There just wasn’t anything that reached out and grabbed me. This would probably pair well with a sirloin, or some nicely aged blue cheese. If you’re like me, try this wine because it’s fruity and affordable ($20). In the end, Sharon and I agreed that for $20, there are sooooooo many good California Cabs that smoke this Bordeaux.

I am fast becoming a fan of right bank Bordeaux. This wine is very nice with bold, dark fruit on the nose and palate. I drank this while having a mild Dominican cigar, and they paired perfectly. Nicely priced at $20.

85 points from Wine Advocate when they rated all of the 2005 Bordeaux. But I really enjoyed it. It has nice dark fruit and the right acidity with a very nice finish. $20

If you're just jumping into reds and you want to try a Bordeaux, this is not the one, friends. I'm afraid with Bordeaux you almost have to go by price. This was unfortunately the first Bordeaux I ever tried and I wouldn't touch another one again for several years until I was talked into trying a Merlot dominated Right Bank Bordeaux (La Cloche de Cornemps), which was less earthy and more fruit forward... and I paid $30 for it too. But don't take my word for it. Taste, taste, and taste some more.

Smooth, even-toned and balanced. Earthy. This is what Bordeaux is supposed to be.
