Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With residual sugar of 15.2%, this is a very sweet wine, but crisp acidity gives it complete balance. The flavors are direct and appealing and, as the variety suggests, powerful in tangerines and honeyed oranges.

Fiore d'Arancio Orange Muscat - NV

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As is normal with Warre’s LBV, this is bottled with a sediment, meaning it can age in the bottle. It is beautifully balanced, the ripe flavors sitting comfortably with the core of acidity and dark tannins. There are dried fruits, raisins and sultanas, as well as fresher sweet plums.

An entry-level tawny, soft, sweet, still keeping fruitiness. The spirit blends well with black plum and treacle flavors, leaving some freshness.

Always a favorite in the world of Moscato d’Asti, this light and luminous dessert wine offers especially clean aromas of honey, melon, peach and white flower. The bubbles offer a firm, refreshing and spicy feel to the mouth.

92-94 Barrel sample. A powerful, spice-driven wine, very rich, with a great seasoning of sweet grapefruit and bright, fresh acidity. At the same time, the wine projects richness, intensity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A smooth and coaxing Sherry with almond and dried fruit aromas that lead perfectly to toffee and almond flavors. There’s more dryness than fruit here, with peanut brittle accents and then a long, smoky finish that doesn’t lose focus. Graceful Oloroso, with a nice individual character.

Gonzalez Byass Sherry - NV

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It may be vendange tardive, but the sweetness is the least of this wine’s qualities. It is more to do with how it relates to the terroir of the Heimbourg vineyard, with its mineral character, and its fine structure and texture. The fruit is still young, and would benefit from 5–10 years aging.

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a strong mineral element in this wine that creates a drying sensation and an interesting juxtaposition to the wine’s inherent sweetness. Honey, stone fruit and fragrant floral tones take over in the mouth.

La Badia Moscato - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There are only a few pockets of vineyard land in Italy with the correct levels of fog or moisture for noble rot (botrytis) and the Marche is one of them. But 2003 was a sweltering hot year and as a result this Sauvignon-based dessert wine lacks its characteristic intensity. You do get apricot, peach and honey over the wine’s lean consistency and there’s a slightly sour taste on the finish.

86-88 Barrel sample. This is packed with dry botrytis, plenty of spice and new wood. It's somewhat simple and obvious at this stage, as it needs more layers of flavors. In time, however, it should develop.
