There is just 9% Cabernet in the blend. Smooth and light, with lean flavors showing herb and bark. The tannins have a green edge to them, and perhaps as a result, the vanilla flavors seem to stick out rather awkwardly.

A seriously good wine, and it’s hard to believe they’re practically giving it away. With its depth of blackcurrant, herb and coffee flavors that are long and deep, its rich tannins and near perfect balance, it’s impressive from start to finish. A very great value from Chalone Wine Group.

A pretty good Merlot for the price. It’s dry and velvety, with ripe flavors of cherries, raspberries and cola. Drink with anything calling for a medium-bodied red wine.

The aromas mingle black cherry and dark chocolate with mint, plus modest oak. In the mouth, it really comes alive with deeply satisfying flavors and soft velvety tannins.

Shows more character than most Australian Merlots, with overtones of leather that add a healthy complexity to the cassis, plum and herbal elements. Slightly dusty tannins on the finish impart welcome grip.

Charred oak is prominent here as it is with most Long Island reds, but exceptionally well integrated within a rich, round wine full of supple dark chocolate and fruit flavors. A good example of yin and yang, Clovis Point’s blend of Merlot, Cab Sauvignon and Franc, and Syrah offsets dense, sweet boysenberry and mocha notes with firm tannins and a dark char finish.

Decent, simple, introductory-level Merlot. Light cherry and plum aromas, with berry and chocolate flavors. Mouthfeel is OK; finish is clean, but a touch more green and tart than expected.

Tasted in a rather tannic flight, this baby was even more tannic. It pours inky black, and reveals nothing in the aroma, save for grapes and oak. Yet there are powerful signs of a magnificent future, especially the long, sweet finish of blackberry syrup. Great now with robust fare, but should hold through the decade.
