Flowery and herbal, with standard redberry aromas. Healthy and juicy, with herbal blueberry, blackberry and chocolate flavors. Finishes with a final dose of herbal character, earth and good layering and feel.

A little overripe and underripe around the edges, with mint and plumped raisin flavors framing the black cherries and cedar. Good, but rustic, and ready now.

Sure, cedar and chocolate are the dominant aromas and flavors, but there’s enough blueberry fruit to stand up to the oak rather nicely. It doesn’t hurt that the oak is high-quality stuff either, as the elements blend together in a harmonious whole. A little oaky, but shows a degree of finesse not often found in Chilean wines at this level.

Offers customary California Merlot aromas of herbs, spicy berries, vanilla from the oak and cocoa. Very bright red fruit in the mouth, brought to the fore via whole-berry fermentation. Mildly tannic with plenty of fresh oak, some of which is American. Right down the middle and solid. With 16% Cabernet Sauvignon and other lesser Bordeaux grapes.

This is a lean, acidic and disagreeable wine. It’s unripe and minty, and even slightly vegetal, although there’s just enough cherry-berry fruit to squeeze by.

Mike Januik, formerly winemaker with Chateau Ste. Michelle, is an old hand in Washington, now entering his third decade nurturing and nursing this state’s fruit. His wines are understated, elegant and graceful, proportioned to age but created for near term enjoyment as well. Excellent, fruit-driven, balanced and restrained.

A lovely Merlot, a bit on the light side, with pure flavors of cherries complexed with smoky oak. Feels rich in tannins in the mouth. Clean and balanced.

Deeply impressive on every level, from the profound, inviting aromas of currants and fine oak to the mouthfeel, which is plush and important. Encased in a superb structure of acidity and firm tannins are ripe, complex flavors of currants, violets, olive tapenade and oatmeal raisin cookies. Completely dry, this beautiful wine should age well for six years or more.

Michel Rolland consults on this extraordinary Merlot, part of Allen Shoup’s Long Shadows project. Dark, dense, supremely concentrated with a silky, smoky, voluptuous mouthfeel, Pedestal is beautifully ripened, nuanced and complete. Lovely notes of bacon and smoked meats permeate the thick, juicy fruit. Still tight and young, this is a Merlot to savor, and to save.
