Sometimes all you need is a nice, inexpensive Merlot to go with that steak, and this is a good one. It’s dry and fruity, a little rough around the edges, with rich berry-cherry flavors and a full, complete mouthfeel.

Murky and a bit sharp and herbal smelling, with a plump, chubby mouthfeel and herbal plum and raspberry flavors. Shows pretty good structure and texture on the finish, with notes of cola and berry fruit. Good as a whole.

The Ratbag makes for a pleasant, if somewhat generic dry red. Dried fruit and prune notes are complemented by chocolate overtones and the mouthfeel is soft and user-friendly.

This big, fat, sexy wine is just what Merlot is supposed to be. It’s softly accessible, yet complex with rich, sweet tannins and a delicious array of cassis, plum, cherry and herb flavors. As good as it is, it possesses a feminine complexity that suggests pairing it with food.

Straightforward, varietally correct Merlot, with aromas of black cherries, chocolate, tobacco and a hint of vanilla. It's medium-weight, with soft tannins and crisp acids that leave your mouth watering. Solid stuff.

Rich and chocolaty, but goes beyond candied simplicity with real complexity of structure. There are cross-currents of the ripest cherries and black raspberries, and a dash of coffee. That structure is built of ripe, smooth tannins, edgy acids and oak shadings, all kept in balance.

Drinks a bit heavy and thick, but there’s no denying the juicy flavors. Plums, sweet blackberries, cherries and herbs flood the mouth, leading to some astringency from tannins.

Smooth textured and framed in rich, ripe tannins, this classy Merlot serves up a lush, complex blend of black cherry, cassis, blackberry, sage, thyme and coffee flavors. Silky sleek on the long finish.

Marks a welcome return to the old Martini style of soft, delicious red wines that are intricate in detail and subtly marked by wood. The flavors spread feather-like over the palate, highlighting black cherry, pepper, tobacco and spice; dry and rich. Has an extra layer of nuance that makes each sip different from the last. —S.H.
