I like this wine for what it isn’t—brash or sweet. Tannins are smooth and manageable, with mushroom and stable notes accenting firm plum and cherry flavors. A little soft on the palate, with a bite of herb at the finish, but it’s nearly as enjoyable as the winery’s excellent Cabernet. Imported by Southern Starz, Inc.

Dusty cherry aromas are slightly spiky and feature some tomato, while the palate is solid, a touch sharp and prickly, but good overall. Snappy raspberry is the one and only flavor, while the finish offers heat and some mild oak. Average to good, and fully drinkable.

A very good representation of mid-priced Washington Merlot, this boasts chunky black cherry fruit wrapped in smoky tannins and some chalky earth. Full, dense and still a bit austere, but built to age well for another 6–8 years.

Menthol and blackberry aromas are followed by a palate of soft and straightforward blackberry, vanilla and anise flavors. It’s an uncomplicated, pleasant package, nicely balanced and easy to enjoy now.

Smooth and integrated but punctuated by spicy oak and plum flavors, this Texas Merlot is a welcome surprise. It starts with aromas of savory meats, smoke and pepper and ends with a lingering finish. A food-friendly wine that’s not overly complex, but enjoyable.

Starts off well, with aromas of toast, vanilla and black cherries. The attack is rich and sweet as well, but then the wine turns a bit drying and herbal on the finish. Needs time—but will the fruit hold?

Dark yet a touch murky on the bouquet, with weight and black-fruit aromas. The palate is plump but healthy, with peppery flavors accenting core blackberry and chocolate. Chunky and proper, if a tad bit bitter on the finish. Gets better as it airs out.

Nice blackberry nose, with cocoa and herb accents. Medium-bodied, and textbook chocolate and plum flavors. Finishes long, with the oak really coming on.
