Nose offers loam, button mushroom, dry leather and rhubarb aromas. The palate is slimmer, with light fruit and leather that carries over to the lightly toasted finish. Simple and straightforward, but good. —K.F.

Has a lot going for it, from the rich, dark color to the savory plum and tobacco flavors to the soft, detailed tannins. Dry and straightforward, a little too soft in acids, but a nice glass of red.

This is a light, pleasant Merlot with cherry, herb and cedar aromas and flavors and a smooth mouthfeel. Evenly textured, but lacks that extra depth to push it to higher levels of quality. Finishes a little short, with a peppery tang and modest tannins.

This least expensive of Sterling’s latest Merlots stands up respectfully beside the winery’s more expensive bottlings, which makes it a good buy. It’s very dry, tannic and elegantly structured, with cherry and blackberry flavors enriched with sweet smoky oak.

Perfectly good in a mainstream way; the nose offers earth and leather with some roasted dark-fruit aromas. Black cherry and raspberry on the palate are softened by some wood, while the finish starts with bold flavors and then veers toward tight tannins. A bit tough, but tasty. From the Napa side, a fine Merlot that shows why Carneros has such a well-deserved reputation for the variety. Dark and juicy, with plum, coffee and herb flavors, this wine has rich tannins and is very dry. It wil likely improve over the next five years.

Light, spicy and well made, with pale fruit flavors of strawberry, cranberry and raspberry. Tannins remain stiff and peppery; the fruit does not seem to have the ripeness to fill out the middle, even with more bottle time.

As the production on this wine climbs (it’s up to 35,000 cases now), the final product becomes more generic. An opening of bold berry fruit comes with a pounding mix of oaky vanilla and milk chocolate, while the palate has acidity for zest but also a lot of creamy oak. Very oaky on the finish, leaving a lasting impression that’s more about resin and vanilla than fruit or individuality.
