This is a difficult Zin to like, because it has a hot, peppery feeling and raisiny taste. Even though the official alcohol is lower than some other Zins, it sticks out. There’s not enough fat, fruity richness to offset it.

A very nice Zinfandel for drinking steaks, chops and cheeses. It’s dry and complex, offering earthy flavors of black and red currants, sage, tobacco and pepper. Lacks a bit of stuffing, but elegant and crisp.

Smells superripe and overly extracted, with jammy, fruit-tart aromas underscored by earthy, herbal notes of tobacco and sage. It’s a big wine, and a little awkward, but it might knit together in the cellar. —S.H.

Fruit, fruit, fruit all the way, and loads of it. Blackberry, black cherry, plum and even loganberry. Spice, too. Cinnamon, tobacco, anise, clove, pepper. It's balanced, rich, harmonious, about as fine as Sierra Foothills Zin gets. That's saying a lot.

Folie à Deux Zinfandel - 1999

High alcohol makes this wine a little hot and sweet, and there may be some residual sugar, but it works in this Foothills Zin, of which this is a classic expression. With some rugged tannins and soft, low acidity, it shows expressive red and black berries, milk chocolate, root beer, gingerbread and peppery spices, with a sweet overlay of oak. Drink now.

Shows quite a depth of flavor, with complex raspberries, cherries, licorice, dried fruit, rose petal, balsam and cinnamon spice notes that finish dry and balanced. Could have better structure, though, as it’s a little soft.

Here’s a big, tannic Zinfandel from a premier vineyard now owned by Gallo. The flavors are bigtime, offering an eruption of blackberries, currants, spiced rum punch, chocolate and licorice. Think of it as Zinfandel on steroids. Calls for equally hefty barbecue, but also has the structure to age interestingly over the next six years, at least.

Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel - 2006

This soft, country-style Zin has candied flavors of raspberries, red currants, licorice, pepper and bacon. It’s sweet in the finish, with a sugary aftertaste. Drink now.

A robust, muscular Zinfandel with bigtime jammy blackberries, cherries and raspberries that have a freshly picked briary taste, and plenty of brisk, fruity acidity. Good for drinking now.

Super-fruity and ultra-soft, with flavors of raspberries, cherries, red currants, bacon, cocoa, cola and lots of peppery spices. It’s a nice Zin to drink with BBQ.
