A white blend dominated by Grenachem, this is soft and open, oily in texture, with white pear flavors. It is a full-bodied wine layered with some wood flavors, from vineyards near the Mediterranean.

The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, which could make for an interesting wine. Unfortunately, this effort, while possessed of supple tannins and fine balance, also boasts an odd garlicky note on the nose, which I found distracting. Imported by Low Country Imports.

This wine is all about minerality. It is dark, with a powerful tannic structure that dominates the spices and red fruits. Strong acidity and a layer of cool freshness mark this wine. A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre, it has aging potential for a couple more years.

Made in the Languedoc at an Australian-owned winery, this Shiraz has both big fruit and characteristic French reserve. Mineral and cherry from beginning to end, plus herb aromas and a peppery finish. Good stuff now, but will show even more with a little time in the bottle. Best Buy.

An impressively concentrated wine, now maturing well, with flavors of herbs, lavender and chocolate, very ripe tannins and spice from the American wood aging. Think of this as Cornas in Languedoc—the power is similar.

Though "oak dominates" this wine, "it’s sexy." Bacon, espresso and dark chocolate add compexity to the oak-derived aromas. Full and smooth in the mouth; tobacco and dried spices, plus some black plum flavors, resonate on the palate. Finishes long with black oak and tannins.

After the complex, varietally true bouquet of smoked meat, plum and herbal-floral notes, this wine doesn’t deliver quite the same wealth of flavor. Lean and high in acidity, it finishes with tea-like tannins. Pretty on the nose, but lacks charm on the palate. Imported by Low Country Imports.

A number of intense aromas and flavors make this Rhône-varietal white very appealing. Ripe apple, melon, honey and anise aromatics open to a full palate of melon, white peach and spice flavors. Fruit-driven, but with great balance, a nice chalky feel, and considerable depth and intensity.
