Lots to like in this dry, earthy wine, with its flavors of black cherries, tobacco and sage. The tannins are practically non-existent, but it’s crisp and tart enough to stand up to chorizo and similar fare.

Full and minty, and quite the bargain at five bucks. This bargain buster features some cherry liqueur and sucking-candy flavors, while the finish is not devoid of some class, as it offers coffee and chocolate notes. Yes, it’s a bit like cherry soda without the bubbles, but what’s not to like at this price, especially if the menu calls for burgers or London broil? If Two Buck Chuck is so popular, try giving this wine “hug,” the English translation for abrazo. Best Buy.

How many $5 wines are this good? Not many. The nose is zesty and aggressive but settles and doesn’t offend, while the juicy, fresh palate has bright cherry and raspberry flavors. Basic, ripe, clean red wine.

Sulfuric, with quite a bit of green character mixed into the fruit. Tastes lean, with herbal notes of raspberry and apple skins. Long and persistent on the finish, but bland in its length.

Sharp and edgy, with burnt leather on the piquant nose. Some red fruit and also a lot of spicy, green notes. Finishes swift and peppery.

Sharp and rubbery on the nose, with a racy, spirited red-cherry character. Trouble is, the acidity is piercing and the fruit, if there ever was any, is quickly exiting stage left.

An old wine that now carries only tart cherry and acidity. Yes, it’s clean, just not friendly. Barely acceptable at this stage.
