Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A single-vineyard Sangiovese made Chianti-style, meaning it’s dry as dust with pronounced acidity. Pretty rich in flavor, though, with a ripe streak of cherries and sweet chocolate. Dry, dusty tannins kick in in the finish.

An interesting wine by virtue of its terroir-driven features. Low in cherry fruit, high in earthy tobacco, dry as a bone and tart with acidity. But it has an elegantly sweet edge that cries out for richly sauced pasta and beef.

This is a big, spicy, powerful Zinfandel that brims with berry, cherry, currant, chocolate and cedar flavors. It’s not particularly subtle, but slams into the palate like an asteroid from space. Calls for barbecue, pure and simple.

I have enjoyed this bottling from Acorn in the past, and I like this one, although it’s a bit simple and soft in jammy fruit. But there’s no denying the wealth of cherries, blackberries, currants, chocolate and leathery spice. Probably best now, and for a few years.

So why would you buy Cab Franc instead of Cab Sauvignon? Here’s why. This has the depth and seriousness of the latter, the light body of Pinot Noir, a dry, cherried richness, and none of the tannins that lots of wine lovers can’t tolerate. Plus, this wine has layers of complexity that make it a delight.

There’s something ruggedly luscious about this Cab Franc. It’s not an ager or particularly complicated, but it does offer up a panoply of ripe red and black currants, anise, dark chocolate and spice flavors. It finishes dry, balanced and charming.

Starts off with wild berry, brambly aromas of earth, sun-warmes wood, coffee and spice. In the mouth, the berry flavors are wrapped in solid tannins, The kind that make your palate numb. It's very dry with a tar, tough finish.

American oak seems overly aggressive on the nose, with dominating aromas of clove and vanilla-tinged wood sap. Once you get past the bouquet, the wine is limpid, silky smooth, and utterly dry, with berry flavors.

Made from Dolcetto, an Italian variety rare in California, this wine tries to struggle beyond an earthiness that’s unnaturally sweet. The result: The berry flavors are ripe, the acidity and tannins fine, but it can’t quite shake its rough, countrified edge.
