Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A relatively light wine from a high-acid vintage. Still tart and showing some youthful jaggedness, it has a sweaty undercurrent that somewhat undermines the fruit. Very tart raspberry/strawberry flavors seem to crack up through the finish, a mélange of acid, toast, heat and chalk.

This unfiltered Syrah carries a strong streak of earth and green, vegetal flavors. They almost bury the pleasing fruit, with its suggestions of cherries and plums. The blend includes 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, which may be contributing the excess earthiness. Perhaps this wine just needs another year of bottle age?

Tannic and earthy, with a burst of tart black cherry fruit in the midpalate. There is an interesting combination of elements here—the juicy fruit, the earthy accents, the high-toned edge to it all—but it does not knit together. The impression is jagged rather than seamless.

Spicy, slightly resinous with notes of leaf, clove and licorice that complement good dark cassis fruit. Some coffee and smoke enter into the middle and finish, though the flavors fall away rather quickly. It’s well balanced and a pleasure to drink, but not built for cellaring.

Lovely concentration and texture make this a standout and the best wine yet from newcomer Adamant Cellars. Berries and cassis fruit flavors are crisply defined and annotated with smoke and earth; the wine has grip and length.

This is 100% Syrah from an excellent vineyard. It’s chewy and even a bit salty in the mouth, with a mix of bell pepper and black pepper over streaks of berry and cassis. Most of the flavor is front-loaded, and the wine fades away into an earthy, fairly tannic finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a juicy, fruity white blend, with more than a hint of honeyed sweetness. Ripe fruit captures flavors of peach flesh and skin, along with tropical suggestions of guava and papaya. In short, this is not your typical, grassy, herbaceous style of Sauv Blanc/Sémillon. I’d serve it as an aperitif, well-chilled.

From the Portteus vineyard, this offers deep fruit flavors from older vines. Cassis, blueberry, black cherry and more are sunk into a bed of smoke and coffee grounds. Though it’s a bit stark and unsophisticated, the fruit shines, highlighted with some sharp volatility.
