This is a new winery for me, but one to watch. The grapes are from Santa Maria Valley, and the wine shows the ripe balance of this fine vintage, with a tremendous depth of tropical fruit, apricot jam and oak-inspired butterscotch flavors. Brisk acidity provides needed balance to the wealth of fruit.

Ultraclean and pure in fruit, with brisk, refreshing acidity, this is an upscale Chardonnay whose lemon-and-lime, pineapple and nectarine flavors are coated with smoky oak. The cool climate and long hangtime of the ’05 vintage have conspired to make this balanced and elegant.

Has a pleasantly light, silky mouthfeel, but the cherry and mulberry fruit tastes a little burnt. Otherwise, this dry Pinot has lots of Santa Maria spiciness.

Made in a dry, acidic style, this fashionable young Pinot Noir needs some time in the bottle. It shows flavors of sour red cherry candy, thyme, pepper, smoke and cedar. Best between 2010–2012.

A bit on the soft side, but very delicious, with melted butter, ripe pineapple, lemondrop and cinnamon spice flavors that finish long and dry.

Soft and smoky, with ripe flavors of pineapple tart, sweet lemon custard, vanilla and cinnamon. Pretty and polished, an easy wine to like.

Here’s a big, ripe Pinot that leaves little to the imagination. It bursts with flavors of black cherries, cherry liqueur, raspberries, cassis, cola, vanilla and smoky oak, all wrapped into a silky texture. Impresses for its sheer power, and should develop bottle complexity for the next 5 or 6 years.

Superripe in blackberry, red plum, cherry, mocha, fig and caramel flavors, this wine certainly scores high on the deliciousness factor. It could use greater structural depth and complexity but is good overall.

Smells overripe, with a sharp, raisiny smell, and tastes hot, harsh and medicinal. It has cough drop cherry flavors that are sugary-sweet and acidic.

A little too ripe for true balance, this Syrah has some raisin and stewed fruit edges to the blackberries and currants. It’s also deficient in acidic structure. A work in progress.
