This big, powerful Pinot Noir needs some time to resolve its contradictions. It’s totally dry, with silky tannins and fine coastal acidity, but there’s a heavy density to the cherry, orange zest, spice and sandalwood flavors. A classic example of an ageworthy Pinot Noir, it should come into its own by 2013.

High acidity gives this wine a serious bite of tartness. It’s unbalanced. The cherry and cola flavors also veer into overripe raisins, giving the wine a grapeskin bitterness.

Too acidic for comfort, with a harsh bite that’s almost vinegary. Too bad, because the underlying cherry and cola flavors are just fine.

This remains for me the pinot to beat in California; deep and rich fruit aromas with layered, complex, spicy scents that combine the traditional black cherry aromas with that of smoked meat, earth, and smoke in a classic Burgundian style; sweet fruit in the mouth, perfumed and ripe flavors; powerful and big in the mouth in a classic New World style; but at the same time the wine is balanced and elegant; very little made so not easy to come by. (19/20) There is bottle variation in this wine, as another bottle was unclean and murky, and had overbalanced acidity; go figure.

This is the very limited production Pinot from this well-known winemaker; powerful nose that explodes from the glass with assertive aromas of ripe, sweet fruit, black fruits dominate, lots of pepper, earth, hints of wood, sweet oriental spices but with real grip; very deep and rich in the mouth with the most powerful flavors that I have experienced in a Pinot Noir; sweet, dense fruit, jammy and layered with complex flavors; earthen and very spicy, peppery; muscular, as one taster commented “Pinot on steroids” but also balanced and complex; some thought it a Syrah; long finish, strong and intense; it will be interesting to see what happens to this wine in a few years. (18/20)

Powerful nose, lots of black cherry fruit, smoke and smoked meat, layers of aromas, perfumed with lilacs and violets; earthen and spicy, very elegant; big flavors, lots of depth and flavor; black cherries and plums, deep and complex with lots of lemon and ripe tannin flavors mixed with sweetness and richness; this wine needs more time, but it is an awesome wine in the New World style; smoked meat mixing with spicy fruit; very limited production, but worth the effort. (19.5/20)
