Alder Ridge is the label for the top wines from Corus Brands. Aromatic and complex, it’s a young wine that seems to still be raveling itself together. The winemaker attributes the choppiness to cross-flow filtering, but it is meaty and substantial, and showing a supple, varietal, seamless profile: bright cranberry and raspberry fruit, layers of coffee, butterscotch and caramel, and finely polished tannins.

Alder Ridge provides grapes to many of Washington’s quality boutiques; this is their frontline estate Cabernet. It shows well in this sleek vintage. Firm and sculpted, with cassis and plum fruit flavors, wrapped in mineral-soaked earth and a finishing wash of coffee grounds. For all its complexity, it is a moderate wine with excellent balance.

A very fine effort. The wine is full flavored without being punishing. There’s plenty of cassis and plum, and nothing syrupy about it. Great balance across the entire palate, with a Bordeaux-like elegance. Notes of iron filings, chalk and light herb complete the picture. 150 cases produced.

Malbec and Petit Verdot are the other two grapes in this juicy, toasty blend. There’s plenty of black cherry fruit, and equally generous flavors of mocha and toast, all wrapped together around ripe, slightly grainy tannins.

Very limited, 100% varietal, this estate-grown Malbec has high-toned aromas and tangy purple berry flavors. Anise and stone streak into the finish; overall a good effort, with fairly light fruit and an herbal undertone.
