It’s tough enough to get big reds to ripen in Monterey, and this rainy vintage didn’t help. Not a bad wine, but the green, herbal tannins are tough to get through. It’s helped by a savory, rich finish.

The underlying flavor of the varietal wine is good and pure, with peaches, pears, and tropical fruits, but the winemaking is heavy. Too much oak and lees results in imbalance.
