Light in body, but fresh and clean, this was a surprise performer in our last round of tastings. Herbal overtones to the cedar, cherry and tobacco notes are correct from a flavor standpoint, but note that this wine doesn’t have the stuffing to pair with hearty, traditional Cabernet pairings.

There’s an unusual but interesting note that accompanies the dusty blackberry aromas—apple, maybe? On the palate, ripe red plum and berry fruit is enveloped by dusty tannins. Fresh, easy to drink, and just the thing for pizza night.

Medium-bodied and a little viscous in the mouth, this value Chard is no fruit bomb, as are many others at this price. It’s rather interesting—look for white stone fruit and floral notes on the palate, and peach and passion fruit notes on the nose. Finishes with a peppery-herbaceous bite.

This Merlot-for-the-masses is nothing fancy, but it has simplicity and bounciness on its side. Smells just as it tastes: fleshy, red, plums, with just the slightest hint of oak on the finish. There are few red wines that this reviewer would ever put on ice, or in the frige for a few minutes, but this Merlot is one of them. - D.M.

Plum jam, black pepper and boysenberry aromas make for a zippy opening but turn stewed in the mouth. A barely perceptible smattering of tannins and some woodsy notes add interest to the short finish. Drink now.
