Complex and showing so much of what we love about Ribera del Duero. Baking spices, mature fruit and leather grace the stately bouquet, while the palate sings a pretty tune of berries, plum and brown sugar. There’s thrust and potency to the mouthfeel but also a toasty, rich, mocha character. Drinking good now but should hold in there for another five to eight years.

A potent, concentrated sort of wine with minerally, crusty aromas, smoked meat and black fruit. The palate is deep and ripe, with pure, tasty, sweet flavors of mildly baked blackberry. Generous late, with mocha and toast on the finish. Best now through 2012.

Grapy, bold and pure, with plenty of black fruit and healthy acids and tannins. Size and drive are what this wine is about; it never steps off the gas, all the while delivering tannic power, some bitter coffee and chocolate notes, and all the blackberry extract you could ask for.

Funky and gassy at first, but with time leather and wild berries emerge on the nose. The mouth offers red plum and blackberry, while the lean, starchy finish is tight, tannic and oaky. Very zippy and alive, with raisin and chocolate nuances.

A bit horsey and scattered at first, but it improves with time. Flavors of blackberry and raspberry are attractive in the glass, as is the smooth finish that comes with some bitter coffee. Very young and aggressive. Bright wine, although some might view it as slightly thin and sour.

Consistent with past vintages, this crianza gets it right without setting off any balloons. It starts with raspberry and cassis aromas and backs that up with slightly citrusy red-fruit flavors. Any rawness or heat on the palate will be tamed by matching it with meat, chorizo, ham, cheese, etc.

Just a bit mulchy on the nose, which signals that is a wine from the hot 2003 vintage. The palate sits on raisin and mocha, and there’s even a creamy, thick feel to it. If you like rich, Porty flavors that border on dessert, it’s likable. But be prepared for it to hit with a thud.

Bold, forward and extracted red wine, with raspberry, earth, compost and a light leafiness to the nose. Tannic and tight, with plum and heavy, ripe berry flavors. Toasty and dark on the finish too, with power and freshness.

Sweet, candied, oaky aromas get it going, and the palate, while tannic and tough, is thin in its midsection. Flavors of vanilla and marshmallow lead the way, yet the finish falls off fast. Decent wine but shows a forced, candied, oaky personality.

Really nice and lush, with an aromatic mix of tobacco, baked fruit, mocha, vanilla, shoe polish, earth and more. It displays a ripe, friendly feel and yummy flavors of mocha, chocolate and savory, subtle berry fruits. Layered on the finish, with lasting notes of fig, mocha and blackberry. Drink now through 2012.
