Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A fresh, rather lightweight Merlot, the 2004 from Alpha Domus does have some tomato-leaf character, but also supple tannins and enough cherry fruit to balance out. There’s decent length on the finish, where it turns a bit tart and peppery.

Doesn't show the vibrant, tropical features you might expect from an unwooded New Zealand Chardonnay, instead offering understated apple and lime fruit and a certain austerity in the finish.

This is a supple, savory and cedary Bordeaux-style blend--albeit one that indulges the current NZ fancy for Malbec (18%). Aromas are mainly black cherries and smoke, but there's an herbal undercurrent that seems to intensify with time in the glass. Does show good length and complexity, so it maybe worth gambling on for the future.

A respectable effort, the 2001 Navigator shows a little too much of the herbal side of Hawke’s Bay to rate higher. Smoky and herbal, it skates dangerously close to green pepper and green bean before bursting into big, black currant flavors on the palate. Supple; drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smoky and toasty at first, slowly giving up hints of Provençal herbs and dark fruit. Opens on the palate to show bright, concentrated berry fruit underscored by smoky oak and a bed of dried herbs. Crisp and fresh on the palate, this Bordeaux Blend could age into something interesting, or it could lose its fruit and show more tart-edged acids. Drink now.

Limes and tangerines at first, later opening up to reveal hints of stone fruits alongside the mixed citrus flavors. A slightly creamy mouthfeel is a plus, and the finish is very fresh and fruity.

This plump, medium-weight Sauvignon Blanc features simple grapefruit aromas and flavors. Turns a little tart, almost metallic, on the finish. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.

Peach, mint and toasted hazelnut aromas lead into bright, citrusy peach and pear flavors. Finishes clean and crisp, albeit a little short. A tasty lightweight built to serve as an apéritif or with light fish and chicken preparations.

Bottled under screwcap, this wine starts off a bit rubbery and sulfurous before revealing fresh black cherry and vanilla flavors that finish snappy and crisp.

Simple, fruity and fresh—not the stuff legends are made of, but a fine everyday Chard that should please most everyone. Tangy tropical and citrus fruit flavors carry a bit of weight, yet end crisp and tart. Imported by Via Pacifica Imports.
