Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Certain Argentine wines have a rustic, foxy character to them that reminds us that winemaking isn’t a factory-proven science. This fits the bill; it’s murky and sharp on the nose, with brambly raspberry sitting in wait. Feelwise, it’s a bit too piercing and choppy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Quite herbal and foxy on the nose, with char and olive aromas. The palate is thick, jammy and clumsy, with bittersweet notes of stewed berry and blackberry syrup. A huge, muscular wine that’s really ripe and untamed.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of Altocedro’s better efforts starts with meaty, ripe, chunky black fruit aromas and a wave of mocha, cocoa and berry syrup. It’s a creamy specimen but has enough acidity and vitality to not run flat. Mocha, carob and plum extend through the finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Violet in color, with chunky, ripe aromas of earth and berries that win you over. Structured and full, but also dry and layered. The fruit comes across ripe, while on the finish everything folds into a nice little square. Not spectacular but very easy to drink and enjoy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
More sweet and rooty than precise on the nose, with spice, leather and oak playing backup. The palate is short in fruit and depth, with mild sharpness and tang to the raspberry and plum flavors. Blends kick and jangled edges with plenty of oak and lactic notes, and in the end it’s good but not up to prime time.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fairly herbal, with burnt briar aromas that cause it to tilt toward acrid. The palate shows mostly tart cranberry and wild berry flavors, and while it looks dark to the eye, the wine is surprisingly shallow and a little bit sharp in the end run.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Earthy and leathery, with some deeper fruit notes below the rustic exterior. The palate shows raisin, carob and bitter chocolate flavors, while coffee and mocha carry the finish. Strains to keep it together, but has its attributes. Imported by Epic Wines.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An intimidating wine in that it’s dark, huge and heavy. The nose is a roasted mass of tar, rubber, smoke and baked berry fruit. It’s thick and fleshy in the mouth, with flavors of cola, chocolate, blackberry and blueberry. Minty and warm late, and overall it’s more about color and size than refinement.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fresh-cut oak sits front and center, and behind it there’s textbook plum and berry fruit. Racy and tannic, but solid and fruity. Almost exactly as expected, although a bit thin as it gets more air. Imported by Epic Wines.

Fully roasted and savory in its aromas, with rubber and a peanutty hardness to the bouquet. Full and forward in the mouth, with a round body and a glaring streak of sharp acids running through the palate. Plum, berry and leather flavors are good, while the finish is peppy and zesty.
