Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full-bodied and direct, with a potent hit of cherryskin bitterness carrying cherry, tea, tobacco and spice flavors, this is a very, very dry, crisp wine that really needs food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A wondeful Fumé-type wine, especially at this price, that reminds me of Sancerre. Bone dry and crisp, it has a minerally taste of the earth underlying the grapefruit, lime and gardenia flavors, and an exceptionally long, spicy finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Few California wineries have striven more to perfect Sangiovese than Amador Foothill. This is a work in progress. The score isn’t high, but it’s a winery to watch. You don’t perfect this varietal overnight. Dry, with black cherry flavors and pretty tannic. The challenge is to tame the tannins and create depth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tough going with this wine. It’s very dry, and shows the high acidity of the variety, and even some rasping tannins. Unfortunately, the fruit isn’t there, despite a modest attempt by the cherry squad to come to the rescue.

A fine Zin from a fine winery. In addition to the berry notes, a smoked-meat/bacony streak adds interest. Easy-drinking and flavorful. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Containing 25% Sémillon, this richly fragrant wine is a big drink. The citrus, melon and spice flavors pack a whallop, while the dry acidity will complement a variety of foods. The finish makes your taste buds sing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bright and racy, with zippy-edged raspberry, strawberry, coffee, chocolate, spice and licorice flavors. The tannins are ripe, though the finish is a bit rustic, with some spice at the end.

Sierra Foothills Zins can be high-alcohol and a bit clumsy. This starts out with jammy, tomato, meaty aromas, and turns unpleasantly hot in the mouth. The ripe, briary flavors are there, and it’s very dry. Turns bitter and harsh in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
You always look to the Foothills for Zin, especially inexpensive Zin, and Amador seldom disappoints. This fine vintage fully ripened the grapes, producing brambly, spicy flavors that are fully dry without excessive alcohol. It’s a bit edgy and lacks finesse, but has that wild, pioneer quality associated with this mountainous region.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Amador Foothill does a good job with Sangiovese, and this dry rosé is made from that variety. It’s a cheerful wine, brisk in acidity and with delicate but complex cherry, rose petal and lavender flavors. The winemaker recommends bouillabaisse, which is a pretty good suggestion.
