Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A crisp, structured wine at first blush, one that exhibits high-toned red-berry and herb aromas and flavors. With air it takes on overripe aromas, and accents of chocolate on the palate. Lipsmacking finish.

Another Syrah that caused great dissent on the panel: One reviewer admired the wine’s herbal, peppery accents and round, supple feel, while another thought that it smelled and tasted like a for-the-masses wine.

A distinctive Viognier, and easily one of the state’s best. Has the usual array of stone and tropical fruit flavors, with a minerality that’s refreshing. Crisp and authoritative, sleek and refined, and perfectly oaked. Stunning, with the richness of a fine Chardonnay.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For all its obvious power, this wine is elegant and stylish. The sweet cherry fruit is wrapped in a layer of lavender, thyme and sweet oak. The flavors coat the mouth and last for a long time. The underlying strength and staying power of this wine shows in the tannic finish. Best after 2007.

Marred by an excessively Port-like character. Seems overly alcoholic, overly sweet, and overly extracted in every sense, with overripe berries that lend a raisiny flavor. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A great wine at a good price. Has pretty aromas, with black cherry, anise, bacon, plum, oak and spice. Really sumptuous textures and flavors, deft and complex. No one fruit flavor stands out but it has impeccable balance and harmony.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A big bold Syrah, ripe and fruity. Stuns the palate with blackberry, cassis and pepper flavors, and also a strong raisiny note. Fruity and clean in the mouth, but the tannins are considerable. Cellar this baby through 2006, then try again. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells smoky-buttery, with lots of upfront citrus fruit. Intensely fruity and strong; sears the palate with concentrated flavors and high acidity. Steely structure, very dry, and finishes long and ripe. What a pretty Viognier.

A Rhone blend of Viognier, Marsanne, and Rousanne, it offers a myriad of fruity, flowery aromas and complex flavors ranging from banana to chocolate cream to melon. The smooth, velvety texture carries sweetly ripe fruit in waves across the palate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Briary, sour plummy aromas on the nose are shrouded by a touch of greenness that some described as sulphur, and others called cilantro. Though the mouthfeel is soft and smooth, the wine’s flavors aren’t more complicated than strong blackberry and tart, toasted oak. Lengthy finish has bitter menthol-pepper flavors.
