Here’s a hefty, big expression of Nebbiolo with thick spice notes and touches of vanilla and cinnamon that sit over a core of bright fruit. The wine offers a soft quality of tannin, followed by tart freshness, resulting in a pleasurable sensation of richness and opulence on the palate. Drink now until 2018.

Thick oak-driven aromas of vanilla, spice and tobacco roll out in front of cassis and black cherry. This is a well-worked wine (the oak element is very strong) in which the winemakers have dulled some of the sharpness of Barbera’s natural acidity.

The 2008 edition of Roero Prachiosso offers a big change over last year. This is an extremely generous, soft and modern interpretation with evident oak and vanilla renderings and loads of ripe black fruit. Nebbiolo’s natural tightness will soften in 1–2 more years.

Here’s a powerfully fruit-driven Barbera d’Alba that gives the impression of high alcohol, ripe fruit and oak use. The wine is lush and smooth in the mouth and thanks to the naturally high acidity, it keeps the palate very clean.

Smoke, ash and graphite notes form an elegant frame to wild berries, orange zest and blue flowers. Cherry wood and mesquite appear in the mouth and the wine is capped by tight, drying tannins.

Barbaresco Cascinotta shows a different side of Nebbiolo (in fact, this vintage marks a stylistic departure from the past) with unique aromas of root beer, spice and kerosene. There’s medium heft and density to the mouthfeel, but the intensity and overall length of the wine is much grander than you’d expect.

This Roero Riserva shows tertiary aromas of candied fruit and crushed licorice that show the aging process, and some slight oxidation, has started. Drying notes of tobacco and herbs appear on the tight close. Drink now.
