Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A lemony, acid-driven Chardonnay that has untypical flavors—must be the central Italian influence at work. A bit like an Italian soda, the fruit is sweet and ripe enough, but it lacks the Chardonnay typicity Americans are used to. Worth a try for the stylistic differences.

This fruity, made-to-quaff Sangiovese has some earthy, mineral notes along with black fruit and full but nonaggressive tannins. Hints of cocoa and licorice add some complexity to what is otherwise a simple, fruity wine. In most ways it’s similar to Beaujolais. Best Buy. —M.S.

Blockbuster Brunello that is welcoming and inviting no matter how you cut it. The aromatic portfolio is luscious and intense with sweet bread, cinnamon, chewy cherry, raspberry roll-up, dried oregano, cassis and blueberry. Concentrated and creamy, this brand is easy to find at retail. Imported by Remy Cointreau USA.

Clearly not the greatest of Tignanellos, but still a fine wine in its own right. One of the founding super Tuscans, this rendition features chunky, grapy, flowery aromas backed by blackberry and black cherry flavors. It’s plump, maybe a bit heavy and oaky, but still worthy of its reputation.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Probably not what you’d expect from this wine. It’s a fair amount gamy, with caramel, warm earth and some bacon on the nose. There’s sweet berry fruit and licorice notes, but also a dry, peppery, woody character. Shows a young, willing attitude, but it’s not the best “Guado” of the past few vintages.

A bouquet of saddle leather, cherry and rhubarb opens to a richly textured palate of sour cherries and dry spice accents. The sprightly, tannic finish offers notes of tart cherry and leather in this solid offering. Drinking well now; can hold through 2005.

Lovely, with its own version of perfume exuding from the glass. Additional rose and berry notes lead to a silky palate featuring prune, flourless chocolate torte and coffee. The back end is tighter and heavier than the front, which bodes well for its future. Made in the modern style.

Fruity, fun and fresh, this young 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot blend is flexible, accommodating and easy to drink. Plum, cherry, toast and menthol notes emerge from the glass, while in the mouth this wine is clean, juicy and smooth, with a spicy finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Minty in the nose, with deep aromatics. As a whole, the bouquet is assuring. Wild blackberry and dark plum fruit create a tasty palate, while the finish is more subtle. It’s a bit tannic and starching, and probably too heavy and forceful to drink today. Some time will soften it up. —M.S.

Fast becoming one of the world’s top luxury cuvées, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Syrah is a complex amalgam of dry, classy fruit, herbal notes, smoked meat, black pepper and baking spices. Its calling card is its perfect body weight. It isn’t heavy or jammy, but it manages to offer tons of stuffing and a graceful finish loaded with the essences of cola, coffee and chocolate. If possible, it should be cellared for several more years.
