Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A heavy wine with youthful tobacco, plum and berry aromas. The bold plum and blackberry flavors are bruising, but the fruit is a kitten compared to the tannic structure of this wine, which hits like a sledgehammer. A very young and willing red, maybe not perfectly refined but powerful.

Warm and bit stewy, with molasses and blackberry on the nose. Surprisingly, things go tangy on the palate. And that tartness remains throughout the finish. Nevertheless this is a good, solid Umbrian red for casual occasions. Needs food to show its stuff.

A big, bold red with vanilla cream and game aromas. Blueberry, dark chocolate and earth flavors carry big tannins. Great with grilled meats. Drink 2004–2010. —C.S.

Deep and sweet and aromas of dark cherry, leather and spice open this big red. Full-flavored and dry, it has good depth of fruit and acidity to balance. Long and powerful, the finish bears full tannins and a blackberry-prune note. This wine is built to last; try it in two or three years-or now with hearty fare.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Another solid, rustic red from Umbria, with dark berry, cumin earth aromas. The four grapes in the blend- Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Cannaiolo, and Ciliegiolo -are vinified separately, then blended prior to cask aging. The result is a big, chewy wine with tart black-cherry flavors and a long but tannic finish. Best with stews or braises.

This Sagrantino passito offers a thick, austere nose that is ripe with notes of blackberry pie, plum cake, Indian spice, bramble and delicate nut. You can taste the tannins that are characteristic of this variety and that give the wine its heft and structure. Pair it with aged pecorino.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Riserva from Montefalco, Umbria is made with 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The overall effect is power, determination and aromas of red fruit, spice, leather, earth and mature berries. The wine is firm and structured, but the tannins are not aggressive.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a thickly concentrated red dessert wine with sweet aromas of blueberry, forest berries and Christmas spice. It has good intensity and a syrupy-dense mouthfeel that ends with a surprising blast of astringency. You definitely need to pair this wine with a chocolate-based dessert in order to soften up those jackhammer tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Intense, penetrating and bold, this is the kind of tannic Umbrian wine you’ll want to pair with polenta and beef stew or wild boar. Sagrantino di Montefalco is a naturally structured and hearty wine but this expression supplements the overall experience with delicate tones of Indian spice, black fruit and root beer. Drink after 2012.
