Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It is helpful when wineries denote their rieslings as "dry" (if appropriate), and this one begins with pleasant scents of stone fruits — pears and white peaches. Dry it definitely is, but it also appears to be heading for the edge of the cliff, with flavors already gravitating from dry toward oxidized.

Crisply fruity, with apples and citrus backed by light toast and vanilla. There’s a nice balance of acids, not too much, but enough to give the wine proper structure and balance.

Tannic and dark, this Yakima Valley Cab shows good ripeness, with blackcurrant and cherry flavors. It’s hard, still tight, and nicely balanced for near-term aging.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
High-toned and sharp, this Cabernet features sleek berry and cassis fruit. On the palate it feels both slightly hot and acidic; it needs decanting. If you like some spice and plenty of new oak, this is a good choice.

This tangy wine is laced with plenty of toasty new oak, giving it scents and flavors of cocoa and spice. Some excellent fruit is there, tasting of tart black cherries, but it seems a bit overwhelmed. —P.G.

Apex has just released this 2002, which makes it, as far as we know, the last of that vintage to see daylight. Dark and smoky, it is already heading into more mature, secondary fruit flavors, and has a pleasing softness throughout. Time has sanded away the rough edges of the tannins, and rounded out the herbal components as well. This is drinking very nicely, and gives you a cellared wine at a new wine price.

This is just now being released, unblended Yakima Valley Syrah, with tight, almost impenetrably hard red fruits. It’s a little too volatile, with lifted scents that include touches of nail polish, and the tannins are tough and chewy. It’s a wine that should be decanted for several hours if you want it to show its best.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is 100% Riesling, and the intense, floral aromas suggest a smattering of Gewürztraminer, at least in essence if not in fact. Beeswax, lemon candy, orange blossom and other juicy citrus components swirl around the palate, making this an exceptionally complex and beguiling wine. Though labeled dry, it carries an impression of fruit sweetness, rather than the bracing minerality of some other dry Rieslings. A wine that is almost Germanic in its attack, and a truly lovely bottle.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Still firm and tight, and packed with plenty of toasty oak, this Cabernet has enough fruit and stuffing to show mixed flavors of cherry, herb, leaf and leather. Very dry and Bordeaux-like in style.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The black cherry flavors characteristic of Washington Merlot are here, but almost buried in massive amounts of oak. The oak imparts flavors of dark, bitter chocolate, cedar and coffee, and dries out the tannic finish, while all but obliterating the fruit. Enough already!
