This opulent and reasonably priced blend of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc is enhanced by a soft Merlot component. A sweet, rich wine with pretty aromatic highlights of mature fruit and spice.

This blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah has a lot of heat and power locked within, recognized by slightly cooked or jammy fruit notes. But you’ll also get very pleasant, warm tones of soft leather and sweet pipe tobacco.

Cherry, citrus rind and oak make for a short, stout nose. It seems more precise on the palate, with pure cherry and coffee flavors poking through a veil of tight tannins. Gets even firmer on the finish, with a smack of raisin. A wine that requires airing; or more cellar time.

Smoky and dark, with blackberry as the main fruit-based aroma. This is one deep, ripe, plump red wine; it shows plum, berry and chocolate on the palate, and that’s followed by toast, vanilla and fudge. In the end it’s a lot like dessert, albeit a tiny bit medicinal and clumsy.

Poggio ai Ginepri (a luscious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot that is aged 50-50 in stainless steel and oak) shows fresh fruit characteristics of blackberry, cherry and plum. There are spice and tobacco notes but they are distant and well dosed. This is a great food wine to pair with any beef, veal or pork dish.

What the 2003 vintage delivers in terms of instant gratification, this wine makes up for with subtle, almost teasing, nuances of berry, clove, spice bread and toast. It’s beautifully expressive in the mouth with firm tannins and very good length.
