Good concentration and noticeable density, with intriguing, briary flavors that mix candied fruit with dusty herbs, cinnamon and cocoa.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Argyle’s top Pinot Noir, the Spirithouse is a block selection of fruit from one of the oldest vineyards in Oregon. A complex play of ripe fruits – berries, plums, hints of orange rind and citrus – intermingles with baking spices, whiffs of smoke, and a slight impression of herb. It’s a big wine, but carries a lot of information on its substantial bones. Let it breathe.

All the patented Argyle glycerin, buttercream and sweet vanilla oak are here. This is a huge success considering the vintage (not a particularly good one); also a big step up from Argyle’s ’97 Reserve. Beautifully crafted, with lemon and just-ripe banana fruit. All the stylistics are present, especially the French oak. 330 cases made.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As far as winemaking goes, this gets the full treatment: French oak, sur lie aging, attention from an excellent winemaker (Rollin Soles), etc. But none of this could turn around the effects of a weak vintage. The bottom line: This Chardonnay doesn’t have the fruit to stand up to the oak; it’s mostly wood and some light lemony notes that you taste.

Yeasty bread dough aromas with herbal notes. Green-apple flavors and dry, but with slight citrus and pineapple notes. Nice texture and a good clean finish. Very complete and well-knit wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Milk chocolate flavors are wrapped around blueberry fruit; this is attractive and fresh, with a smooth center. It lacks a little concentration on the back end, but it’s ready to drink right now.

Good varietal character, with smoky cherry, orange peel, cherry and vanilla. Supple, creamy and sweet with vanilla and spice. Pleasant, with nice complexity.

With 10 years on the yeast in the bottle, it is no surprise to find sweet cream, unsalted butter, cardamom, white bread and lemon-candy aromas and flavors. The soft acidity and medium-length, talc-y finish leave no questions as to why this was “disgorged on demand.” Drink now, only 405 cases were made of this 80% Pinot, 20% Chard blend.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The leader in Northwest sparkling wines for more than two decades, Argyle continues to show its mastery, mixing New World fruit power with Old World technique. Big, bold and loaded with ripe apples, this vintage brut starts out full-bodied but reveals more subtlety as it goes, adding hints of strawberry and cocoa in a rush of flavor.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Argyle sets the standard for Northwest sparkling wine, and this wine beguiles from the beginning. The massive bead, citrus-scented bouquet and perfect fruit is balanced elegantly by palate-clearing acids and just a hint of toast. The wine is a 100% barrel-fermented blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay.
