There’s no mistaking that Caprai touch. Resin, dark chocolate, coffee bean and new oak in layer after layer from the man who put Montefalco on the enological map. This might be the quintessential Sagrantino. It’s jammed full of tobacco, cola, plum and blackberry aromas. Nothing disappoints after that; the palate is a blast of black fruit and cherry, while the finish hits squarely with rock-hard tannins as well as a delicious buttery oak note. Hold for more than five years for best results.

Not a wine you will easily forget. Marketing-savvy Marco Caprai has taken a difficult, little-known variety and turned it into an international superstar. Here’s a dense and thickly extracted sweet red wine with impenetrable concentration and intense notes of black cherry, blackberry preserves, plum cake and Indian spice. True to the Sagrantino variety, the wine has jackhammer tannins that taste like black tea and spice.

Caprai’s luminous Grechetto from central Italy is full-bodied and opulent and offers layers of honey, stone fruit, yellow rose and vanilla cream. The wine has power and persistency thanks to its natural density and richness.

The color is dark and youthful, while the nose is at first earthy and dusty before opening to reveal a deep plum core. Dark cherry and plum fruit mixes with coffee on the palate, while the finish is perfectly broad and smooth, an appropriate epilogue to a fine, extracted, modern Sangiovese-based wine. Sweet and spicy on the nose, with floral notes, perfume and then a blast of buttery oak. This wine pours on the black cherry and plum. On the finish a current of wood rips on through without so much as an “excuse me.” Oaky at first, but improves as it absorbs some air. Hold until 2005.

Floral and barnyard aromas start showing fruit on the palatte with juicy blackberries and cedar. The tannins are soft and well integrated for a wine that is meant to be drunk soon.
