Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Apples and vanilla toast on the nose lead to pear, lime and honey on the palate with this easy-drinking wine from Seneca Lake producer Atwater. Harsh frosts that year forced the winery to source grapes from Columbia Valley in Washington--a fairly successful effort though there's a leanness to the overall character of the wine. A lingering finish adds some heft. Pair with crab cakes or curries.

There are a number of lovely Cab Francs coming from the Finger Lakes, but the smell of ripe red cherries accented with rich mocha, vanilla and smoke make Atwater’s especially enticing. Lusciously fruity on the palate with intense blackberry and raspberry flavors, it’s balanced with rustic notes of bramble, herbs, earth and violets. Soft tannins and smoke carry through to a long finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though richly perfumed with rose petals and elderflower, the flowery aromatics are reined in by bright lemon and citrus peel notes. The palate is plush and rich with flavors evocative of earl grey tea served with rose petal jam, with a gentle acidity to keep things fresh.

A straightforward nose with honest raspberry fruit and an underlying green plum note. There's well-defined acidity and rounded tannins though a turnip note makes for a less than stellar ending. Drink now to 1 year.

Here’s an archetypical Cabernet Franc nose: green vegetables, cigar, tobacco and tomato skin. Raw tomato notes come through on the silky palate while a bit of rhubarb marks the medium finish. Drink up.

Creamy, opulent aromas of honey, apricot and melon are followed by a balanced, harmonious blend of fruit and toast in this reserve Riesling from the Finger Lakes’ Atwater Estate Vineyards. There’s ample weight but a fun, bright raciness in the midpalate, making this a great wine for food pairing.

Hints of smoke and wet stone combine with sweet Granny Smith apple and stonefruit aromas on the nose of this inviting dry Riesling. Smoke seeps through on the palate as well, melding with brighter flavors like orange peel and underripe tangerine, making for a refreshing yet deeply compelling sip.

Bright apple and pear flavors mingle in this full-bodied Vidal Blanc. There’s a sweetness to the wine, but it’s tempered by a spicy strain that helps keep it aloft. Pretty, with unique character.

This has a balance and elegance that recommends it above many New York wines of the same variety. An expressive nose of red berry, coffee, some spice leads into balanced, appetizing flavors of cherry and pepper with a smoky, rich edge. Dry and food-friendly, this has class.
