Tastes sugared, like sweetened cherry and black raspberry cola, spiced with cinnamon. In other words, not really dry. Could resolve this seeming imbalance with a year or two in bottle.

What a fabulous wine. So rich and forward in black cherry, cocoa, leather and spice flavors, yet subtle and complex. Despite a powerful start it reveals itself slowly, spreading layers of fruit, spice and oak across the palate. The texture is wonderfully silky, backed up with lively acids. Wonderful now, but with the stuffing to develop additional complexities through the decade.

There’s a smoky aroma that’s almost cigarette ashy, and a distractingly sweet sugary finish to the cherry and cola flavors of this Pinot Noir. Could be going through a dumb phase. Try after 2009.

From the Pinot Noir Days in Chicago, tried the August West Graham Family Noir from the Russian River Valley as well as the Santa Lucia of which I don't have all the details. I did enjoy the Graham considerably more as it was more fruit forward with a nice cherry flavor, very strong and I like that in a pinot noir. The Santa Lucia could have stood to breathe a little more, it tasted really tight.
