Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of the markers for Vinho Verde, this brand gets better and better. The 2005 is a new blend, with 10% of Alvarinho from the Aveleda estate. It is ripe and rich, with great solid full fruits in the mouth, tropical but with some citrus character. It’s bone dry, with fine finishing acidity. Imported by Aveleda Imports.

With its light fizz and low alcohol, this is classic Vinho Verde, totally drinkable now, a delicious apéritif. The apple and lemon flavors are just right, the final hint of sweetness never cloying.

Quinta da Aguieira is a property owned by Aveleda in the Bairrada. From there, they have produced a Touriga Nacional wine of high acids, black cherry fruits and a dark streak of tannins, with the richness reserved for the aftertaste. The wine rolls firmly around the mouth, black and tannic.

A step up from the Follies range, this is a big and richly smooth black wine, its tannins well integrated into the great plum juice fruits. The wine is ripe, now ready to drink, the final blackberry acidity giving a bright boost.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional, this combination brings out the elegance of the Cabernet, with its juicy black currant fruit flavors. The tannins are a touch green, leaving bell pepper flavors on a wine that finishes tight.

Aveleda’s more traditional Vinho Verde is still perfectly fresh, with crisp green plum and grapefruit flavors. A blend of Trajadura and Loureiro, it is fresh but full-bodied with good intensity of fruit. Imported by Aveleda Imports.

Aromas and flavors of lightly spiced white peaches. There’s a firm round mouthfeel, enlivened by a slight prickle of carbon dioxide. Turns almost powdery on the finish, the dusting of cinnamon coming to the fore.

A fine Vinho Verde spritz makes this an immediately attractive, mouth-freshening, crisp, apple-flavored wine. There is plenty of acidity. The soft, medium sweet aftertaste makes it a fine apéritif wine and blends well with the rest of the wine’s freshness.

Floral and pretty in the nose; this captures the spritzy Vinho Verde style to a tee. A lemony profile with vital acids makes this the right counterpart to crab, lobster or shrimp salad. It’ll cut through the mayonnaise, augmenting the flavors of the sea.
