Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Desiderio is an outstandingly delicious Merlot from Cortona with a soft, yielding personality and loads of sweet cherry-berry nuances. The wine boasts excellent complexity thanks to the playful notes of peppermint, herbs, root beer and cola that give it undying persistency and intensity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thick as molasses and dark as caramelized brown sugar, the wine oozes out of the bottle releasing concentrated aromas of butterscotch, toffee, honey, licorice, coffee, resin and maple syrup. Grapes from the Montepulciano area are dried in a ventilated room and the wine ages over 10 years in tiny oak barrels resulting in thick, dark concentration. Don’t pair it with food: Vin Santo as good as this deserves to be enjoyed alone, as a so-called “meditation wine.”

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sweet spice aromas of cinnamon and vanilla come at the heels of bright berry fruit and cherries. This is a plush, modern Merlot (with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon for extra texture and dimension) that offers well-integrated layers of fruit and oak spice. The mouthfeel is round, soft and long-lasting.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This vintage of Vino Nobile may be Avignonesi’s best in ten years or more. The wine is rich, saturated and bright thanks to the impressive integrity of its cherry, blackberry and spice aromas.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a Sauvignon Blanc (with 15% Chardonnay) from a warm Italian climate (Cortona, Tuscany) that offers broad and thick aromas of passionfruit, peach and a touch of mango. The wine is light and streamlined in the mouth and makes a good partner to light finger foods or appetizers.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a dense, thickly extracted Vino Nobile with aromas that recall new fruit—fresh, red cherry and ripe blueberry—and new wood, such as vanilla and carpentry shavings. It tastes very new, almost too new for a 2005, and lacks the deep penetrating complexity you should otherwise expect from this beautiful part of Tuscany. It’s easy and very fruity in the mouth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s less impressive than the 2004, but the 2005 Desiderio still offers attractive concentration and rich tones of cherry, blackberry, spice and tobacco. There’s a noticeable oak element here that comes off as toast and vanilla and the wine ends with chewy, sweet tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This sweet wine from Italy is guaranteed to blow your socks off. Its thickness and density resembles concentrated maple syrup or molasses. It is made with Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) grapes that are air-dried and then aged in small wood containers for many careful years. The gorgeous aromas include roasted chestnuts, brown sugar, prunes and sweet figs and you can sense the power too.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s an understated Vino Nobile with elegant, but not very intense, notes of blackberry, almond, spice, mesquite wood and cola. The wine is thin and a bit sharp on the palate with crisp acidity and medium length on the close.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
New-oak and raw-fruit aromas create a sharp, somewhat angular bouquet holding the slightest hint of vinegar. Airing reveals smoky notes and more richness. Plenty of cherry and berry on the palate mixed with cedar and vanilla. The mouthfeel, meanwhile, seems a little heavy. Imported by Dalla Terra.
