This wine already seems mature. The color is fading and the aromas are dusty and raisiny. All in all it seems a bit ungenerous for a ’97. The tannins are kind of starching and it lacks lushness. With all that said, if offers ample cherry, spice and plenty of tannic fodder for rich foods like osso buco or lamb shanks.

Everything about this Barolo is sensational, from the aromatic notes of eucalyptus and wintergreen to the bright cherries on the palate to the smooth, spicy finish. There’s nothing tired or off about this approachable middleweight. The spicy, drying tannins seem right, as do the rooty undernotes and overall balance. It’s not overwhelming or too demanding, so it can be drunk in the near future. But holding it for 10 years is also an option.

Here is a ripe Dolcetto d’Alba with mature aromas of raspberry, strawberry and cherry syrup. The wine is rich and dense in the mouth with a sweet berry aftertaste that would pair well with meatloaf or beef stew.

Pretty aromas of expensive leather, calfskin and roses follow through to a subtle palate of tar and violets. Cherry and wild berry flavors perfume the medium finish. Tannins are a bit too muscular for the otherwise delicate structure; drink after 2011.

Elegant but gripping, with cherry, violet and leather notes on the nose, followed by a rapberry and rose-infused palate. Black earth and berry notes flavor the long finish. The very austere tannins will need until 2012 to come around.

This was another solid version of the modern Dolcetto, showing dark fruit, spice and a core of plum jam. The tannins need a year or so to become civilized, but overall this is a versatile wine that will be very food friendly.

The nose is rich and easy; packed with dark fruit, a touch of oak. Not terribly serious, but beautifully balanced and very likeable. The finish is short-medium, and the fruit stays with it. A comfort wine for comfort food.

Vigna del Mandorlo Dolcetto d’Alba opens with bright freshness and loads of cherry, blueberry, raspberry and toasted almond. The wine shows freshness that is balanced by smooth, velvety tannins.

This Barbera d’Alba opens with dark, sophisticated aromas of exotic spice, black fruit, toasted nut, cherry, root beer and licorice. There’s a touch of natural rubber at the back and the wine offers some sweet fruit flavors as well.
