Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Classic nose, opens with full aromas of sweet lemons and lots of mineral tones, slate and earth, touch of smoke, later takes on richness and depth almost shifting to butterscotch tones; sweet and ripe in the front of the mouth with layers of fruit and minerals; then quickly overcome by powerful dry citrus fruit flavors that are focused but not oppressive; big and powerful with lots of peppery spice at the end. (19/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and ripe nose with the unmistakable presence of sour cabbage, but at the same time rich and ripe with sweet fruit and honeyed tones, powerful and intense nose; a beautiful wine with great focus and definition; sweet fruit is augmented by intense lemony flavors; dry acidity but perfectly synchronized with the rest of the wine; long and elegant finish. (19.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Overripe and funky nose with very advanced characteristics, smells oxidized and damaged; pretty much similar in the mouth with the flavors of oxidized fruit; the wine is quite ripe and has a fair amount of sweetness, but it has all of the characteristics of a wine that is past its time; thin and citric at the finish with little appeal; this wine came from Rob Caine’s cellar, so the source is not at issue. (12/20) Tasted again later in the year from a different source, with the same damaged flavors; clearly there is a fundamental flaw to this wine.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Complex nose with almost textbook aromas that range from sweet ripe fruit on the one hand, to the more aggressive aromas of petrol, rubber, and green herbs, some softness in the nose with green grass and lightly perfumed floral scents; powerful and intense in the mouth; this is not yet ready for prime time, showing an aggressive and biting acidity at the front of the mouth; this softens more in the mid-mouth and by the time the wine finishes, there is an abundance of sweet fruit flavors that can most accurately be characterized as reminiscent of hard lemon drop candy; long, focused finish; this is wonderful, although still in its infancy. (19/20) Tasted again later in the year with Rob and Linda Caine with consistent notes in the main.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Very strong aromatics, green herbs, flowers, wood, earth, candied lemons, mint; sweet in the front of the mouth, but at the same time there is an austerity to this wine that shows itself in dry minerality; elegant, laced with varying shades of lemon and lemon peel; robust finish with strong fruit flourishes. (17/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Interesting nose, seems very advanced and slightly maderized, soft and sweet with candied fruit aromas, seems clumsy though and lacks finesse, heavy, very perfumed; opens sweet and rich in the mouth with soft acidity; a bit herbal with a touch of greenness; at the same time though there is the presence of honey and ripe fruit; this is food wine but it lacks a soul; more citrusy and lemony at the finish. (16.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Opening nose of sour cabbage and slate, smoke and minerals, but also sweet aromatic fruit; very citric and lemony in the mouth, thin and acerbic with an overabundance of acidity; I can’t see this wine evolving into anything better. (13/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Wonderful spicy nose but also laced strongly with bacon fat and smoked meat aromas, minerals, green herbs, shale, white pepper, complex nose and intense; sweet in the front of the mouth, but then moving quickly to show the expected presence of shale and minerals; the fruit is austere in this wine, but it is there and nicely balanced; very focused and balanced with a well-defined structure and a long pure finish. (18.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet nose, more presence of vanilla and caramel than in the Niellon, still shows the minerals and gunpowder aromas that these wines often have; crisp and clean in the mouth, but shows more earth and clay than fruit; spicy but quite dry; lacks the succulence of ripe fruit; more of a hard shale-tinged finish; perhaps not its time yet. (16.5/20) A magnum of this wine as served at the Chevaliers Blanc II dinner was pretty consistent, with perhaps a bit more sweetness and more perfumed new oak aromas, but otherwise consistent.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Powerful nose, quite perfumed, opening with a strong presence of herbs and gunpowder mixing with sweet fruit and slate; sweet fruit in the front of the mouth, but this wine has wonderful focus right from the beginning; powerful and intense with layers of flavor; lots of lemon and citrus notes; minerals; succulent at the same time; long finish, polished and elegant. (19/20)
