Round with perfectly accurate, varietally correct aromas and flavors. Bright without being sharp, showing sweet-sour fruit and pepper hints on the close. Quite drinkable and quite mainstream.

An interesting wine that’s dry, yet shows some distinctly sweet notes. The apple-grape front end is fruity, somewhat Riesling-like. The appealing, tart green apple close turns crisper and drier. Light weight with good acidity, a good choice for moderately spicy foods, and pretty tasty on its own.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This tasty Viognier hits all the right notes, presenting very appealing honeysuckle-spice aromas and flavors. It’s not heavy or sappy, and good acidity supports the fruit. Finishes long and with a very nice blend of spice and mineral notes.

Medium weight with good flavor and varietal character after a slightly muddy opening. The wine expands, improving in the glass where the dark berry fruit and tobacco, earth and toasty oak accents gain focus. Solid, basic Cabernet with a decently long finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This compelling wooded Sauvignon Blanc is spicy and complex but still very fresh, striking a delicious balance between curvy and classic. Tropical fruit and vanilla meld together with a crisp minerality that lends itself to creative food pairing and refreshing summer sips.

A medium to deep ruby color opens things up. The wine is well-balanced and the tannins soft. Unfortunately, however, this structure is fleshed out with only light coffee notes, and therein lies the problem.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Stylistically, this blend is much like a Bordeaux. At first, bright cherry and raspberry fruit ride atop a racy, dry palate. With deeper inspection comes the integration of earthy aromatics with oak, plum and kirsch notes. A little more richness wouldn’t hurt. —M.S.

A light and basic Chardonnay that lacks the fruit to match the oak utilized. There’s structure and it finishes long, but the wine is dominated by toasted oak.

Dark cherry and toast shows on the nose of this straightforward Cabernet. The wine offers more of the same and some earthy shadings on the dry and even palate. Finishes with medium length, and displays a hint of chocolate on the back end.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The wines of Backsberg have a distinctive, artistic quality to them that makes them ideal for collectors and drinkers who seek wines with style. This Pinotage has those qualities, with its layers of cinnamon and deep berry on the nose and smooth, integrated berry and smoke flavors. This is a real Pinotage so expect the rubbery smoke that goes along with it—but it’s also elegant, offering structure and complexity with a gentle touch.
