Truly varietally correct, in the silky mouthfeel, crisp acids, delicate mouthfeel and cherry flavors, but goes the extra mile in achieving real complexity. Addictively drinkable, one of those wines whose pleasure is accentuated by a slight resistance, due to a sprinkling of dusty tannins.

Over the top, with its heavy plaster of oak, and a flatness that no amount of fruit, which this wine has in spades, can overcome.

The bouquet offers dazzling aromas, including pineapple, banana, cinnamon, nutmeg, roasted nuts and butter. On the palate, the wine becomes more focused: taut pear, citrus and golden apple flavors closely wrapped in a tasty butterscotch and toast cocoon. Finishes long and even; could still use six months to a year to unwind.

Our panel tasted Baileyana’s regular Firepeak 2003 Syrah earlier this year and found it a little green, but still a good wine. This best block selection is richer, but still fairly green and peppery, with sharp acids.

Here’s a dark, young, rather tough wine that needs some time to come around. In youth, it’s shut down and tannic, although there’s a wealth of currant, leather, plum, mocha, cola and spice flavors. Give it until the fall of 2008.

This is Baileyana’s top Chardonnay, and the ’06 defines what makes Edna Valley such a special place to grow it. Acidity and ripeness are the stars, with bright, explosive flavors of pineapples, pears, Meyer lemons, limes and kiwi fruits. The smoky, spicy oak is perfectly integrated into this delightful wine.

This is a dry Chardonnay marked by pronounced acids and steely minerals. The underlying flavors are of exotic pineapples and guavas, while new oak and lees aging add richer notes of buttered toast and sour cream. Drink now.

A Zin with nice flavors and textures, though most of them are oak-derived. Sweet cream, spice, black tea and mixed berry; oak and pepper dominate the palate, though there is some tart black fruit underneath. Finishes woody.

In youth this wine is marked by almost excessive acidity and dryness, the result of the cool vintage in this cool region. Its ageworthiness may be limited, but give it a year or so to allow the berry, currant, cola and oak flavors to develop bottle character.

On the sharp, acidic side despite well-ripened pineapple fruit, oak and lees. Try with boldly flavored foods that call for a big Chard.
